Here’s what to budget for: 1️⃣ Employee events and activities: Once you’ve selected key moments to mark this year, make sure you (or your ERG) have funds allocated to deliver more than rainbow cupcakes. 2️⃣ Guest speaker and talent fees: Gone are the days of swapping a spot on a panel for “exposure”. Be prepared to compensate advocates and artists for their time, expertise and creativity. 3️⃣ Leadership and allyship training: Factor in professional development opportunities for ERG leaders, and inclusion workshops for all employees, delivered by trusted providers. 4️⃣ Community donations: Partner organisations rely on your funding, so plan regular contributions in advance and set aside some extra cash for unexpected challenges. 5️⃣ Decorations and merchandise: From Pride flags for the office and pronoun pins for team members, to rewards and recognition for ERG leaders, keep a small kitty for these joyful purchases. Music that’s too loud clears a crowd! 🎶🔊 Volume control is of the utmost importance for any business. 🔊🏢 A study done by the non-profit, Action on Hearing Loss, found that “Of 1,461 people surveyed, 91% said they would not go back to a restaurant where the noise level was too high, 79% said they've left a place early because it was too noisy, and 75% said they were likely to go out more often if the noise levels were quieter.” 📊🗣️ However, in a bar or brewery setting, louder volumes can increase the number of drinks purchased per customer, according to another study by McCarron and Tierney. 🍻📈 So - volume has a big impact on how customers view your business, especially restaurants. (Post 1 of 3) Great small group events to raise enthusiasm and money… #BreakthruEventIngredients Lot’s of events have been happening for great causes during these past few months.  I recently had the privilege of attending a dinner for a group that had never done one before!  And they did a great job.  I’ll breakdown two reasons why: #1) The Right People:  They had the right people in attendance.  Initially the founder was saying, “I don’t know who to invite…how can we even get 100 people in the room?”  Her team encouraged her to simply start making a list and to recruit some of her key influencers to help.  She went to work on this and hit paydirt.  Her connectors were ready to help.  A few agreed to fill more than one table. #2) The Invitation:  They were clear on the purpose of the event - they wanted to invite people to give and generate enthusiasm for future growth.  They didn’t dance around the fundraising issue.  Didn’t apologize for it.  They were sharing stories of impact, casting vision for the future, and inviting people to consider joining them.  They kept the event moving and segued to the invitation seamlessly, clearly, and with a response device.  They went a little overtime, but that’s easily fixed in future events. The founder’s goal was to break even financially, knowing they would get introduced to new people. They were able to do that and raise about $14,000 above their costs.  Not a bad night for a small nonprofit. Now it’s time for the magic to begin.  The follow-up strategy.  I’ll write more about this in upcoming posts.
