🚂 This week, discussions at COP28 UAE included how to decarbonize transportation - a sector that accounts for more than 30% of global CO2 emissions. 🌫 One big output from #cop28 was that CEOs of leading shipping lines worldwide (Hapag-Lloyd AG, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, Wallenius Wilhelmsen) issued a joint declaration, calling for the establishment of four 'cornerstones' for maritime decarbonization and urging the International Maritime Organization to create a regulatory environment to expedite the transition to clean fuels. Heavy-duty transportation is particularly challenging to decarbonize because it is difficult to electrify directly. As a result, alternative fuels, such as clean hydrogen and ammonia, will be essential to abate the sector. 8RH2, our ultra-low-carbon hydrogen production tech, is built around our CO2 Convective Reformer (CCR) technology to deliver hydrogen and ammonia with extremely low carbon intensity and do so more economically than conventional solutions. This is the key to making a meaningful #netzero impact, making a solution that is good for the environment, and making it affordable. The Plenary is meeting right now at #cop28 and has agreed the text worked on overnight - we have a deal in Dubai! There’s a lot to dig through and this is undoubtedly a compromise, but one many thought impossible over the past 48 hours. Some quick reflections from me - and I am sure many of us will be poring over the text through the day: - We now have a clear agreement on “transitioning away” from fossil fuels - To support that, the role of removals technologies has been emphasised. CCUS and hydrogen need to step up and deliver, with important implications for capital flows - Fossil fuel subsidies aren’t going away, but “inefficient” ones that don’t tackle “energy poverty” or a “just transition” will, increasing transition risks - We’ve still got a “phase down” rather than a “phase out” of unabated coal power - and whilst the wider fossil fuel transition is anchored “in keeping with the science” this is left more ambiguous, against a backdrop of campaigns against the financing of metallurgical coal #BaringaatCOP28 Emily Farrimond Colin Preston
