What's the objective for your sport & its strategy to deliver? The UK 2012 Olympics had spin-off benefits to market the UK; the feel-good in the nation, & the changes in attitudes to diversity & inclusion, particularly through the para-Olympics, were exceptional. Though, we’ve gone backward in many of those in the UK. However, the London Olympics said its primary objective was to have more young people participate in Sport. Except for cycling, it didn’t happen.   Does Wimbledon grow participation in Tennis in the UK? It feels like the biggest & most distinctly branded slam – home of strawberries & cream, a strict white dress code & perfect grass courts. It’s cool & trendy. Sponsors, like Rolex & Lanson Champagne, exude aspiration and luxury. The tech companies like IBM & Vodafone attach themselves & bring in hefty sponsor fees.  Wimbledon takes in probably more than £300m in rights & income. Wimbledon is a listed event in the UK, so it has to be on a free-to air broadcaster. That should ensure mass exposure for tennis. Wimbledon has done a brilliant job of increasing exposure via social media. According to Comscore, in 2024, social media activity related to Wimbledon generated 190 million total actions, up from 159 million in 2023. This is an engagement increase of 31 million actions year-on-year. This awareness and an ever-increasing amount of money made from Wimbledon is then primarily passed on to the Lawn Tennis Association. The LTA’s mission is to “Grow tennis by making it welcoming, enjoyable & inspiring to everyone.” Now look at the growth from Statista's chart on the participation of those playing twice a month. From 2016 to 2023, it's essentially flat. Yes, kicking in after COVID, there was a surge. The Raducanu effect after her US Open win helped, so there was a mini-boom in 2022, going from 3.3 million to 4.7 million saying they played during the year.  But a sport can't attach its hope for growth to a star player. Tennis in the UK remains a sport with funding that hasn’t cracked its plan for sustained growth. Still, less than 1 million people in the UK play tennis twice a month. The LTA spends £113.7m on tennis each year, which is more than £100 per player.  Yet, tennis has the most significant opportunity to increase participation. Paddle ball is the world’s fastest-growing sport. It’s a racket sport played in doubles on an enclosed court. The question for the LTA is whether it has the strategic bravery to change the game & use Paddleball to increase participation. Chasing money is what many sports & their governing bodies seem to be about. The Football World Cup in Qatar is one of many cases in point. Many of those in high-paying jobs in sports would fail if they were judged by the objectives to increase participation & the plan & ideas to deliver it. Professional sports people know a goal without a plan is just a wish—time for our sports bodies to play the same game. #sport #olympics #tennis

Great to see a new strategic framework for major events from UK Sport, building on the success of previous major events strategies. The UK is recognised for having world-class expertise for hosting and delivering major events (whether sports events, cultural, festivals, business events, conferences, exhibitions, and all other event types). This UK Sport strategic approach includes five guiding principles: - Reach and resonance. - Collaboration. - Insight. - Impact. - Resilience While this strategy has a major sports events focus, a number of the actions identified would help the development of the wider events industry, as we know the infrastructure, supply chain and expertise for delivery is drawn from across the events industry and beyond. With all the challenges around the world at the moment, it would be fantastic if UK government could acknowledge the final sign of success, "Events strengthen the UK's international reputation" (p. 14) and provide the business environment, support and funding for the events industry (and this strategy) to succeed. #uksport #ukevents #sports #events #management #strategy

Countdown to the 2028 LA Olympics: 1,410 Days! 🚨 The clock is ticking for event producers and they’ll be the first to tell you that it’s never too early to start preparing. As LA28 begins to transition from planning to development and delivery, the pressure is on to meet deadlines and stick to budgets. This L.A. Times article has some great insight from Casey Wasserman, Chairman and CEO of Wasserman, on the challenges that come with planning this worldwide event. “It’s on my phone,” he says. “And I look at it every morning.” As chairman of the private group in charge of staging the Games, Wasserman also knows there is much to do before then. He muses: “We can’t buy more time.” To manage all the moving parts behind the scenes, organizing committees are expected to evolve throughout the process of bidding, planning, and delivering – which requires their teams to transition seamlessly from one skill set to another. Paris 2024 - The value of sport Whilst I am just heading back from Paris, I am still searching for the right words to describe this experience. Paris has simply outdone itself with these Olympic Games. Whether it was the Stade de France or the Beach Volleyball stadium right next to the Eiffel Tower, each venue was special and provided an impressive backdrop for the world's greatest athletes. The French capital handled the onslaught of thousands of sports enthusiasts with an organizational masterstroke: lanes were always on time and the crowds were guided patiently by thousands of volunteers, police and military personnel. Paris has just managed to magically combine the love of its own culture with the greatest sportsevent in the world. But it wasn't just Paris as a city and the performance of all the athlets that impressed, but also to see how sport connects people from all over the world. In each competition, the athletes were celebrated euphorically by the audience, recognizing their performance regardless of their origin or skin colour. And that‘s what I love about sports - it conveys values and makes supposed boundaries disappear. In yesterday‘s Beach Volleyball final, Germany lost to the Swedes, but in the end all thirteen thousand spectators celebrated the end of this incredible competition together paying tribute to the performance of all athletes during the last two weeks. Paris was expecting around 15 million spectators from all over the world during the Olympics and I hope that every single one will take the values experienced in Paris into their private and professional lives. And above all, I hope that everyone who can will invest in (local) sport - whether with a donation or by volunteering. Introducing urban sports into the Olympic sports program is a significant step forward, a discipline developed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that promises a bright future for the Olympic Games. This long-term development is designed to engage with a younger audience, injecting new energy and excitement into the Games. Key highlights: ⭐ Recent sporting additions to the Olympics, including breaking, skateboarding and climbing, have improved the gender balance ⭐ The success of urban sports is not just about the athletes, but also about the commercial brands that have shown faith in them. Companies like Nike, Tag Heuer, Mercedes, Kosé cosmetics, G-Shock, Samsung, and Visa have invested significantly in urban sports and their athletes, playing a crucial role in their rise to prominence. ⭐ Andy Anson, chief executive of the British Olympic Association, said that adding urban sports has made it easier to show commercial partners that the Olympics is still a “valuable property”. ⭐ Olympics are as relevant now as they ever were to young people. With the introduction of urban sports, these sports resonated with younger audiences. We are seeing that benefit and how they have moved from the linear generation to the digital generation. Some thoughts on sport: This year marked my first UEFA European Championship viewing experience, and one standout narrative was the sporting prowess of Slovenia. With a population slightly surpassing 2 million, comparable to New Mexico, Slovenia consistently surpasses expectations in sports. This success piqued my curiosity. Slovenia's sporting achievements, boasting talents like Luka Doncic and Jan Oblak, can be attributed to its unique approach to accessibility. Almost 70% of Slovenians engage in recreational sports year-round, showcasing a stark contrast to profit-centric U.S. athletic structures. In Slovenia, the focus lies on inclusivity and training rather than just winning. This ethos stands in contrast to the U.S., where elite services often come with a hefty price tag, hindering widespread participation. The emphasis on equal access and comprehensive skill development, as exemplified by NBA MVP Nikola Jokic's experience, is pivotal. Embracing accessibility over exclusivity could foster a more competitive sports landscape, prioritizing player development over innate talent. To nurture a culture of athletic excellence, the U.S. must shift towards prioritizing accessibility, especially through public funding. Fostering an environment where every individual has equal opportunities to learn and grow will breed a nation of formidable athletes. Our nation's sports trajectory hinges on safeguarding children's play opportunities. By focusing on holistic athlete development rather than institutional profits, we can unlock the full potential of our society, transcending athletic realms to benefit all.
