As #childrensmentalhealthweek draws to a close, just a reminder that the experiences our children have, the information they absorb and the examples they are set, have both short AND long term impacts. It’s a bit cliché to talk about childhood in therapy but they really are our formative years in so many ways. Cognitively speaking, we are like a sponge all the way up to our early 20s. You don’t just learn to walk and talk as a kid … you learn to think, to perceive and to act too. Be mindful that this key stage of life shapes our belief systems that we then carry through with us in to adulthood. Recognising our past exposure as an adult is so important to understanding why we think the way we do or how we behave in certain situations. It’s the key that can unlock the change you want to see.

Ask questions, start and end a song together, and distract with something visual. Blocking physical repetitive movements safely and redirecting with a toy, a game, or a conversation is a way to break up the repetitive behaviors. — Take a look at my videos on Calm Body Calm Minds!
