MVRDV has released details of their master plan for Tour & Taxis Lake Side in Brussels, Belgium. The master plan consists of 17 buildings designed by seven different architects including MVRDV, adding 800 residential units to the area. The master plan is split into three sections. A mixed office and housing campus to the east contains large-scale buildings, including cross-laminated timber and lightweight hybrid structures. The middle section, meanwhile, sees 14 individual buildings clustered around a public garden. The ground floors of the buildings contain public amenities and shops, while all 14 buildings hold either green or energy-producing roofs. The third section of the master plan blends the dense neighborhood into the adjacent Tour & Taxis Park, with a more open space punctuated by a tower known as the Park Building. https://lnkd.in/gwATQdvt

How do you imagine the cities of the future?💡 Cities of the future will be socially connected hubs, supporting classy and timeless architecture and sustainability. Passive systems such as Lumon's balcony glazing enhance self-sufficiency of buildings and cityscapes. The awarded Ørsted Gardens is a perfect example of this. Once called the ugliest building in Denmark, the building now boasts modern design and functionality. "No one has come up with such a completely correct proposal for a renovation that manages both the climatic, acoustic and thermal aspects, but at the same time also wraps it in a form that supports the social cohesion of the building," notes Christopher Carlsen, Architect at Tegnestuen LOKAL about the project. Wood makes you a better, more focused and creative worker. A paper based by a research team from the Chair of Timber Structures and Building Construction at the Technical University of Munich proves the far reaching benefits for humans of using wood in construction. The study found that having wood grain as an interior texture boosts creativity and helps people to stay focused on their tasks for longer. Surveys and studies of workers placed in timber-lined buildings showed that they were calmer, more adept at problem solving, less likely to be distracted, and were able to be more productive than their counterparts in more artificial surroundings. Today I would like to present another project from our Danish colleagues at Randi A/S No.2 The Støvring Sundhedshus health center is the focal point of a large development project in Støvring, Denmark. The design by arkitekterne BJØRK & MAIGÅRD ApS, with its simple basic conceptual form, fits into the existing context, which ranges from typical single-family homes to a future building with up to seven floors. Randi A/S Member of ECO Schulte GmbH & Co. KG Schulte Group, has equipped the building with lever handles and our ECO Newton TS-62 door closers. In addition, FTA ECO- Vent was installed - our all-rounder for escape route security with smoke/ heat extraction. This guarantees functional safety and maximum ease of access. Visible columns in solid timber and partially visible CLT floor constructions are used as load-bearing and recurring construction materials. This project reference is another masterpiece that contains one of the typical principles that as architects we have treated so much since University days. Building (artificial intervention) vs. Context (natural environment) the relation between both can fill discussions for hours and call countless theory principles.  This particular example, apart from being very poetic, shows a good relation with a superb natural context.  It reduces its impact and takes a very simple euclidean shape in order to play a positive role with the surrounding without trying to mimetize it. The line of design also roots deeper into traditional Australian construction systems but simplifies them and makes the most out of them. It produces or misses physical limits / boundaries deliberately so the connection with outdoor spaces is always nice and enjoyable.
