At this time every year, citizens and decision-makers gather at Folkemødet on Bornholm to engage in meaningful dialogue. From Teledyne Marine, Ole Søe-Pedersen and Lars Munk participated in talks and events throughout the days. Folkemødet attracts around 60,000 participants who join debates, workshops, and speeches. Lars Munk took part in a panel debate on Public Private Partnerships, addressing Critical Underwater Infrastructure, Mission Vital Infrastructure, and Security of Supplies — topics of significant relevance in today's climate. Given Bornholm's proximity to the recent underwater explosions at the Nord Stream pipeline, safety and security were prominent themes this year. It is evident that surveying and monitoring the sea are crucial for protecting critical underwater infrastructure and ensuring the safety of our waterways and ports. We are very proud to announce that JAMSTEC picks MOL Group companies for key roles in arctic research vessel development and operation! MOL Ship Management and MOL Marine & Engineering, both wholly owned MOL subsidiaries, have been selected as a pre-commissioning crew dispatcher and expected operator for the Arctic research vessel ordered by JAMSTEC. JAMSTEC’s decision is based on the results of the review process in the Call for Proposals. The vessel, currently under construction, will be Japan's first ice-breaking Arctic research vessel, and serve as an international research platform with world-class observation functions. The objectives are to contribute to the sustainable development, utilization, and conservation of the Arctic region by conducting comprehensive observations of the region's atmosphere, meteorology, oceans, and sea ice and enhancing the collection of observational data and scientific knowledge, and to foster the development of researchers, engineers, and other highly skilled personnel. In response to its selection as the pre-commissioning crew dispatcher and expected operator, the MOL Group will offer the pre-commissioning crew dispatch services until the vessel is delivered, which is expected to be around November 2026, and take charge of vessel operation after delivery. The MOL Group is committed to addressing evolving social needs, including environmental conservation, with innovative technology and services and to delivering new value to all stakeholders, and fully recognizes the significance of the Arctic research vessel, which brings new value to people, society, and the Earth. The group will contribute to a better future for the Earth through safe operation of the vessel and creation of an international research platform by utilizing its accumulated know-how and human resources developed in the operation of Arctic shipping routes and handling of LNG fuel. It’s a privilege to Co-Chair the Advisory Board for the 2023 Deepwater Operations exhibition and conference. Held in tandem with the Topsides, Platforms and Hulls exhibition and conference, this is a significant industry event which draws together professionals who share insights, perspectives and thoughts on the future prospects for offshore operations.   I’m delighted that we’ve been able to attract leading industry players to deliver keynote speeches and to participate in specialist workshops, panel discussions and networking opportunities – all part of a busy programme that can not only make sense of, but also help define the future direction of our industry.   It’s also great that one of my ICR colleagues, Engineering Technical Authority Gareth Urukalo, BSc, CEng, will also be an active participant. He’s joining industry peers for a technology-focused session on engineered composite repairs to corroded deck plating.   It’s just one of a myriad of topics that will be explored during the event at the Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center from October 23 to 25.   This gathering will focus not only on specialist technical subjects, but also on some of the big issues of our time; there’s a session, for example, on how we can effectively decarbonise offshore oil and gas operations.   It will be big, busy – and, I’m sure, highly productive. Wärtsilä, EBDG join forces on methanol-fueled power barge Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has entered into a collaboration agreement with US-based naval architecture and marine engineering firm Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) to further develop EBDG’s clean harbor alternative mobile power (CHAMP) barge design. The floating mobile power platform has been designed to function in ports across the US in accordance with the specific zero-emission plans and requirements established by local authorities and regulations. When delivered, CHAMP will use methanol-fuelled power generated by the Wärtsilä 32 Methanol engine. This engine helps reduce emissions, thus meeting the decarbonization requirements of most ports, according to the Finnish firm. 🌊 MARIN's Commitment to Sustainable Shipping: Updates from MENENS Project! 🌊 MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of maritime innovation through projects like MENENS, part of their overarching ambition, "Better Ship, Blue Oceans." In MENENS, MARIN’s leading the charge as an independent knowledge partner, focusing on knowledge and tool development to realize climate-neutral and zero-emission ships. Here's a glimpse into their involvement and the tasks they're undertaking in MENENS: 1️⃣ Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Technologies: In collaboration with partners, MARIN’s delving into the world of ICE technologies. From existing to upcoming innovations, they're exploring their potential impact on shipping and how they can be modelled and applied. 2️⃣ Propulsion, Power & Energy (PPE) System Simulation and Testing: Their focus extends to the performance of methanol power converters within larger propulsion, power, and energy systems. Through their Zero Emission Lab (ZEL) and virtual counterpart (v-ZEL), they're developing testing capabilities to understand system behaviour and assess emission reduction solutions effectively. 3️⃣ Model Based System Engineering (MBSE): With alternative fuel solutions comes the challenge of integration and interfacing. They're investigating how MBSE can streamline the ship design process, ensuring traceability and consistency to mitigate risks associated with technical readiness levels and operational capabilities. 4️⃣ Hydrodynamic Tool Chain Development: Energy transition isn't just about alternative fuels—it's also about maximizing energy efficiency. Collaborating with Van Oossanen, they're enhancing hydrodynamic tools to accurately predict a ship's propulsive power needs early in the design stage, empowering naval architects to make informed decisions. These tasks align directly with MARIN's Technology Plan and foster collaboration across projects like SH2IPDRIVE and joint industry initiatives.
