By celebrating diversity, and making space for many different voices and lived experiences, we can engage more deeply with one another, find creative solutions to problems, and open our minds to new possibilities. BAME is not a term or ‘category’ we should be using!!  ❌ At Deya, we are on a mission to revolutionise the creative industry by connecting Black creative talent with leading companies. Part of our drive to create Deya was born out of sheer frustration due to terms like ‘BAME’ often not affording Black creative talent a ‘fair’ seat at the table. It should be the norm, not the exception. BAME is used to encompass diverse communities, most often in relation to diversity and inclusion. However, it often homogenises unique experiences and struggles, reducing them into one umbrella term. We surveyed creative companies in the UK and they told us that: 📍It’s hard to find Black creative talent or it requires more resources to do it effectively.  📍Building Diversity and Inclusion initiatives is difficult and can often be seen as superficial.  📍Cultural training misses the mark and is perceived as a bandaid. We’re dedicated to connecting Black creative talent with creative companies, and we’re committed to shaping new, more effective processes for diversity in creative organisations. INTEGRITY is a core value for many organizations. As a church youth leader, this month's virtue is about integrity- choosing to be truthful in whatever you say and do. During our powerful exercise yesterday, the word TRUST was visible until situations and life choices distorted the view. In the same way, integrity can be lost little by little if we repeatedly say and do things that aren’t wise choices. This had me thinking about the work that we do in the DEI space. Trust and integrity are critical for retaining talent because they create a positive work environment and culture where employees feel respected and valued. When trust is present, employees are more likely to stay loyal and engaged, leading to higher job satisfaction and reduced turnover, ultimately benefiting the organization's success. Let’s celebrate and promote respect for all cultures and embrace the richness of diversity in our global community with Integrity! 🌎Happy Global Diversity Awareness Month!

We asked our Maritime Services Rep for Embrace Shane Newton his thoughts on Black History Month. This is what he had to say: What is Black History Month? "Black History Month held in October in the UK is a national celebration that looks to promote and celebrate black peoples contributions to British society and culture. It also, aids the understanding of Black History and culture in general."   What does it mean to you? "For me it is an opportunity to celebrate and remember those who pathed the way and broke down barriers before us. Not just celebrities but those within our communities who’s relentless commitment to driving change has made things better for the next generation."   What does it mean for Embrace? "Educating and highlighting to all members of staff the importance of why we celebrate the achievements of Black people. Embrace will try to highlight those that have had an impact in the Maritime and defence sector as it is important to show role models that young aspiring people in our business can aspire towards."   Is there any events available/activities for Apprentices to get involved in? "There is a lunch and learn session on October the 4th, the topic is 'The Windrush generation' as it is the 75th anniversary. Anyone wanting to join the Embrace ERG are also free to do so. We are always looking to increase our membership!"   Anything else you would like to include: "As important as BHM is and other celebratory events DE&I is year round and I would really encourage everyone think of it that way. You don’t need to wait for national inclusion week to ensure you are being inclusive. You don’t have to wait for International woman in engineering day to appreciate and show woman in engineering the respect they deserve. 🌟 Celebrating Black Heritage Month at Residence Inn by Marriott Greenville @ Carolina Point ! 🌟 Throughout this incredible month of February, we've had the privilege of recognizing and honoring the rich tapestry of Black history, culture, and achievements. At Hospitality America diversity and inclusion are not just words; they are embedded in our culture, and Black Heritage Month has been a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from embracing our differences. 🤎 Our #blackhistorymonth recognition featured inspiring stories from an employee, highlighting their achievements, contributions, and the unique perspectives they bring from their family hertiage. 📚 Learning & Development: We've had #blackheritage trivia during morning huddles and discussions every Monday morning to foster a deeper understanding of Black history, racial equity, and the importance of unity. Education is key to breaking down barriers and building a more inclusive workplace. 🎨 Cultural Celebrations: We created hands of all colors with the world as a background and asked our team to right on the hand how they would foster change in the world. Our goal is to create a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. 🙌 Future Commitments: As we say farewell to Black Heritage Month, our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion remains unwavering. We will continue to learn, grow, and take meaningful actions to ensure a workplace where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. 🌍 Embracing Diversity, Empowering Unity: At Hospitality America, we believe that diversity is our strength, and unity is our power. Did you know that Essentra celebrates Black History month twice a year? That’s because October is Black History Month in UK, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. However, in the US & Canada, Black History Month is celebrated in February. By recognising this important event twice a year, we encourage cross-cultural learning and understanding among our colleagues. How are you and your teams celebrating Black History Month? We’d love to hear from you!   We are committed to creating a safe, supportive work environment that champions equality and celebrates diversity and it is embedded into the Culture pillar of our ESG strategy. We continue to progress our work to create a more diverse and inclusive workplace:   ▪️ We have an engaged and diverse team across different departments who form our Diversity and Inclusion employee network leading activities across the organisation, including global recognition of Pride and Black History Month. ▪️ We continue to embed our global Diversity and Inclusion Policy launched in 2019. ▪️ In our 2022 employee survey, we saw improvements in how colleagues perceive diversity, equality and inclusion at Essentra and we review responses annually against industry benchmarks.   We have more planned throughout the month and encourage our colleagues to 'Make Equality Work' and 'Be Inclusive' this October, and beyond.

By embracing diversity and fostering an inclusive culture, we can create environments where every team member feels valued and empowered. Let’s use this day to reflect on our roles as leaders in promoting equity and supporting the ongoing fight for social justice.
