🚀 UK scale-ups are increasingly relying on overseas investors to grow 🌍 New research published by the BVCA and Beauhurst found that UK #scaleups increasingly rely on foreign investment to expand operations due to a shortage of late stage and follow-on funding from UK investors, widening the 'scale-up gap' in investments. Findings revealed: 📈 Beauhurst: Since 2019, the proportion of foreign investment in larger UK #venturecapital deals has risen significantly, highlighting a need for stronger domestic funding frameworks. 💷 BVCA: Only 3% of UK pension fund investment in British private capital comes from domestic sources. An important part of closing the scale up gap is unlocking greater levels of domestic institutional investment such as investment by UK defined contribution #pension schemes, through initiatives like the British Business Bank's Growth Fund or a UK TIBI scheme. The BVCA is backing efforts to increase investment by UK pension funds in #privateequity and venture capital in order to support the growth ambition of British scale-ups and generate stronger returns for UK pension savers. 3dSo the key question. What is the actual source of foreign late stage and scale up finance? Private equity? Super angels? These funds are not coming from foreign pension funds or are they? Raiding, through redirection, UK pension funds is high risk for our pensions, which prefer to invest in better quality scale up opportunities elsewhere. The solution is to produce better quality startups that lead to better quality scaleups compared to foreign markets....and give the investment community a nudge that investment is a risk taking exercise.
