If you haven’t done so yet, now is a great time to reflect on your personal and professional progress towards goals, performance, and development. ⭐️ Whether you do an annual performance evaluation, that plus a mid-year, quarterly check-ins, etc. doing a reflection every 3 or so months gives you a good pulse on how things are trending. Try organizing your wins and feedback now so it will help you down the road with your evaluation(s). 🚦 What do you want to start, stop, and continue doing? 👩🏼💻 It’s also a great time to update your resume and LinkedIn! DAY 16 "WHAT SHOULD I DO SERIES" ( EMPLOYEE EDITION) : QUESTION OF THE DAY : WHAT SHOULD I DO, I DON'T FEEL PREPARED FOR MY NEW POSTING. IT'S AN UNFAMILIAR TERRAIN It might be difficult to adjust to a new unit or department, especially if it's in a field you're not familiar with. Here are some actions you can take to deal with this circumstance: ✅ Seek Information and Clarification: Ask your superiors or colleagues for information about your new role and responsibilities. Don't hesitate to ask questions, even if they seem basic. Also, take some time to learn about the unit or department on your own. Read up on relevant materials and try to understand the key functions and goals. ✅ Set Clear Expectations: Communicate with your supervisor about what they expect from you in your new role. This will help you align your efforts with their expectations. ✅ Listen and Observe: Pay close attention to how things are done in your new unit. Observe processes, workflows, and interactions to get a better understanding of the culture. ✅ Seek Training and Development: If there are specific skills or knowledge areas you feel you lack, ask if there are training opportunities available. This could be formal training sessions or informal mentorship. ✅ Take Initiative: Proactively take on tasks and projects. This will show your willingness to learn and contribute, and it can also be a great learning experience. ✅ Keep an Organised Notebook: Write down important information, procedures, and names. Having a reference guide can be immensely helpful in the early stages. ✅ Ask for Feedback and Celebrate Small Wins: Regularly ask for feedback on your performance. This will give you insights into what you're doing well and areas where you can improve. Acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small. This will help boost your confidence and morale. Q. How can I tell if I'm doing a good job? I've been in my job for eight months. I'm learning the ropes, making some small contributions but my boss isn't the most communicative person and I want to make sure he's happy with my work. How can I find out? A. Do you have an end-of-the-year meeting with your boss coming up? If so, write to him and say, "Stan, at our one-on-one meeting on December 9, I would love your insights into my performance at Acme Explosives so far, and any recommendations for 2024 you'd like to share with me." If you don't have a catch-up meeting scheduled, you can ask for one. Then your message might say, "Hi Stan, do you have time for a catch-up meeting with me to talk about 2024 and my performance in the job so far? I would love to get your insights." Ideally you'll meet with your boss for a one-on-one conversation at least once a month. If you've been having those meetings but the topic of your performance hasn't come up, go ahead and bring it up, like this: "Stan, since we're talking about my Q1 2024 goals, let me ask you, how would you say I'm doing in the job thus far? What would you like me to keep doing, do more of, do less of and/or do differently in 2024?" These topics are standard for performance reviews but perhaps your first formal performance review won't take place until your one-year anniversary. That date will be here before you know it so why not get a jump on the conversation (and the helpful input) now? Here's to you!
