Today we are celebrating a world-first in our journey to net zero hydrogen distilling. Direct-fired distillation trials using 100% hydrogen have proven successful at the Yamazaki distillery in Japan, marking a milestone moment for WhiskHy, our partnership project with green technology company, Supercritical Solutions. The WhiskHy project, launched in 2021, is funded through the UK government’s Green Distilleries Competition. The project has also made considerable advancements in its proprietary technology, the first ever ultra-efficient, high pressure electrolyser, which would enable a distillery to produce and store hydrogen on site, powered by local renewable power sources. As part of our Proof Positive sustainability strategy, we are committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions across our entire value chain by 2040, and pursuing innovative green technology across our global distilleries to do so. This is obviously good R&D, but the report suggests that UK government money was used to fund this development in Japan. I hope that the learning will soon be transferred into Scotch Whisky innovations.
