Mitsubishi, Suntory, and ENEOS to jointly develop a new supply chain to produce #biomass based #PET bottles commercially for the first time! ✳️ NESTE will produce bio-naphtha from used cooking and waste oils, i.e., #renewableresources rather than from fossil-fuel based naphtha feedstock. ✳️ ENEOS will produce bio-paraxylene (PX) from bio-naphtha sourced from NESTE. The Bio-PX will be used for making bio-PTA, a key raw material for manufacturing bio-PET resin. ✳️ SUNTORY will produce 35 million “sustainable” PET bottles by 2024 using the bio-PET resin from ENEOS, which will have a lower carbon footprint than conventional PET, but end-of-life considerations still apply. Yesterday, with our partners 3 Rivers Energy Partners, we officially broke ground at the Booker Noe distillery on a project that I believe is very significant for the food and beverage production industry, from a circular economy perspective. When completed, the distillery will be 65% powered by renewable gas, produced with Hitachi Zosen Inova North America's wet anaerobic digestion technology, inhouse amine biogas upgrading system, and integrated process piping and controls, using waste from whiskey production. Overall onsite greenhouse gas emissions will also be reduced by 50%, and local farmers will benefit from a carbon-negative, fossil-fuel free fertilizer produced with byproduct from our digesters. For large scale food and beverage manufacturers, taking the waste byproduct that is already being generated during the production process, and turning it into a valuable resource, makes sense on so many levels. Firstly, there is the benefit of turning methane-generating waste into a clean fuel that can be used to power a facility or supplied to the grid, instead of being directly released into the atmosphere through landfilling or spreading on pastures. Secondly, the waste has to be dealt with anyway, and this can be a real problem when food and beverage producers are dealing with the volume of waste produced from large scale manufacturing - far more effective to turn this problem into a solution, treating the waste as a resource. Thirdly, the technology and innovation is there - Hitachi Zosen Inova is a world leader in clean tech innovation, that enables us to take just about any waste from food and beverage production and turn it into valuable energy, and other resources that the world needs. I hope that the groundbreaking ceremony at the Booker Noe distillery not only marks a momentous milestone for the whiskey production sector, but that it also inspires other food and beverage producers to rethink how they are dealing with their waste, and to start incorporating waste-to-x thinking in their sustainability and energy efficiency strategies.  #rng #wastetox #wasteasaresource #circulareconomy #sustainability #whiskey #beamsuntory

Have you heard of quadgeneration? ✳️ An innovative system at a large Coca-Cola bottling facility in New York due to startup in December will generate energy, run heating and cooling systems in parallel - plus capture carbon. Two Jenbacher gas engines will be used to cogenerate heat and electricity. ✳️ CO2 recovered from the engine exhausts will be purified to food-grade standards to carbonate beverages. High-efficiency on-site energy production will cut carbon emissions and reduce dependence on the grid.
