Sometimes you go to a talk after work, and your brain is already half-fried from the day's meetings and challenges. You wonder if you're going to be able to absorb any more information, or if at this point your body is merely a vessel for the free pizza. Luckily, at The Marketing Meetup this evening, we had the brilliant, straight-talking Kate Hutchinson taking us through the highs and lows of setting up Yorkshire Sustainability Week. There were so many valuable insights on having a clear vision, making sacrifices, and building a solid community ( I encourage you to go and find out about the work she's been doing) but one that stood out to me was right at the end, when she answered a question from the audience. I forget the exact phrasing, but the question was along the lines of: "You're clearly very driven, so as you set this up yourself in line with your values, how would you advise those who work for other people's businesses to find the drive to achieve goals that might not be their own?" Again, not sure on the exact phrasing of Kate's response but I think it was: "It's very, very hard." She then essentially went on to talk about how life has the potential to be pretty crap if we don't have a purpose (poorly paraphrasing there) and it was a bit of a lightbulb moment for me. Glean is probably the first place I've worked where I've felt like I truly align with my employer's mission statement and values (sorry past employers, nothing personal!) I was so excited about it when I joined, and I remembered tonight that I still am. I realised that it is incredibly important not to lose sight of that purpose, whatever we're doing as a role. Of course we need targets, we need to problem solve, drive growth and smash our KPIs - but we also need to check ourselves and remember our purpose when we're neck deep in spreadsheets. (Easier said than done, I know.) So what's our purpose at its very core? For me it's pretty simple: Helping people. Cheers for the reminder, Kate! #purpose #leedsbusiness #Marketing #purposeled
