🥣 For this week’s #ExploreTheObject, we are looking at a Neolithic Bowl c. 3500BC, which is part of the National Museum of Ireland's collection. 🧐 The bowl is simple; very dark with burnished surfaces and lattice pattern decorations. It may have been used for drinking, and similar vessels have been found elsewhere in Ireland. 🗾 Yet, because of the context in which it was found, this everyday object is extraordinarily eloquent. It was discovered in 1992 in a small cave in Annagh, Co. Limerick, along with remains of three other pots, three full human skeletons, two other sets of partial remains, various animal bones and a flint blade and arrowhead. The bowl and pots tell us that the people were farmers; the other objects tell us that they were also hunters and warriors. 🦴This ancient grave offers two major revelations. One is that the development of agriculture was accompanied by considerable violence. The men who were chosen for burial seem to have been veteran local champions. Two of them were in their 50s when they died — perhaps 20 years older than the norm. The skeletons show that all three had suffered violence: two had serious head injuries, one a broken nose, one a fractured rib. 👨🌾 The other thing we learn from Annagh is that the transition to agriculture did not happen all at once; socially and culturally people retained their links to an older, wilder way of life. Clearing land was hard work: the skeletons show the wear and tear of vigorous lives and the carrying of heavy weights. 📣 Each week we will take a look at the wonderful objects, dating from c.5000BC to the early 21st century, which are featured in 'A History of Ireland in 100 Objects' by Fintan O'Toole. 📲 Learn about the objects and purchase 'A History of Ireland in 100 Objects' 👉 https://bit.ly/3s1nnzL Image © National Museum of Ireland #100objects #RIApublications #RoyalIrishAcademy

Historical Markers are a nuanced part of the #historyenterprise. Many states started erecting metal markers in the 1930s, sometimes utilizing #NewDeal funding. The catalog of what’s on them has continued to grow in diversity and inclusion. A problem with markers is duration in that ways of expressing #history has changed with #language and the kinds of questions asked of the Past. Revising legacy markers can almost be a full time job! In the meantime, the inventory of markers continues to grow.
More than 600 state historical markers have been erected throughout Wisconsin since the program was first authorized by a state statute in 1943. Today, the Wisconsin Historical Society seeks to expand the stories told across the state by issuing a special call for applications for new historical markers on topics that are currently underrepresented within the program. Up to 12 new markers will be funded thanks to a generous grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation! Visit this page for more information on how to apply and full eligibility requirements: https://lnkd.in/e47zNMTk. Applications are due by April 30, 2024. 📸: Mooningwaanikaaning Marker Dedication on Madeline Island (608th state historical marker) | September 30, 2023 | Rob Goslin Sr., Nicole Boyd, Mike Wiggins Jr., Christian Overland
