Hey LinkedIn whanau! This post is a little look into how politics and environmental advocacy is carried out in the EU for my colleagues back home, and a prompt for some thinking about how we create change in our political systems. The European Union elections are coming up on 9 June and in preparation, the European Environmental Bureau has produced an insightful scoreboard about how each party in the parliament has voted on key environmental policy documents over the term that is coming to a close. I can't take any credit for this awesome tool, but I wanted to share as I think it raises an interesting question for Aotearoa. 1. How do we think our political parties would score on a similar scoreboard? Were are they being heroes or prehistoric thinkers? 2. Beyond the ballot of the Dutch elections 🕑 Geert Wilders' recent win sparked talk of potential shifts in EU legislation to match his agenda, particularly in the realm of climate policies, indicating an imminent wave of potential adjustments. Alert #EUelections2024 post🔔 "A broad far-right win at the upcoming EU elections could make it vastly more complicated to pass ambitious environmental and climate legislation needed to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal, a think-tank has warned in a new report published on Wednesday. The study, by the think-tank European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), found that the EU may see a major shift to the right in many countries, with populist radical right parties gaining votes and seats at the expense of the centrist, centre-left, and green parties. Citizens across the 27 nations will be going to the polls on June 6-9 for the next European Parliament, signalling the start of the new five-year political term. They will be among about half of the world's population eligible to vote, in what has been defined as a record year for democracy globally. By then, anti-European populists could top the polls in nine member states (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Slovakia) and come second or third in a further nine countries (Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and Sweden). As a consequence, almost half of the EU Parliament's members will be coming outside of the 'super grand coalition' of the three centrist groups (EPP, S&D, and Renew) that were ensured a majority back in 2019. Inside the European Parliament, a populist right coalition of Christian democrats, conservatives, and radical right MEPs could emerge with a majority for the first time. This ‘sharp right turn’ would likely have significant consequences for European-level policies, said the ECFR, and limit the EU’s actions to tackle climate change. The bloc's chair of the Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change, Ottmar Edenhofer, struck a more optimistic note in an interview with Carbon Pulse on Wednesday. Having a larger far-right presence in the European Parliament will make things more complicated, Edenhofer conceded, but he also pointed out that it is the Commission that puts forth the proposals.
