The words you use are so important in everything you do in healthcare.
Recognize that what means some thing to one person may mean something else to another - often the opposite, turning your good feeling into a bad feeling for the the one whose preference we didn’t understand or consider.
This issue of the term and meaning in “value-based” care isn’t new, and we haven’t solved it. My vote is for “outcomes-focused care” and here’s why.
“Whole person” seems too fluffy. “Coordinated” too obvious. And the endgame of both, which patients, clients, participants, providers, physicians, clinicians, policymakers, payers, and philanthropists ALL agree on is outcomes.
Perhaps the only group that doesn’t think outcomes are as fundamental to progress (and I don’t love this generalization even though that’s what LinkedIn is for, aligned to human brain behavior) are startups. They are usually trying to make people
healthier with the best intentions, but lack the clinical experience and/or health systems experience to move the dial.
We do need to treat people as if their brains and other organs are in one body, including their emotions and mental health. They also need a stable roof overhead for all those organs to stay healthy. So yes, our education of professionals and policymakers needs to make clear #MentalHealthHealth.
We also need to build bridges, in my experience technologically and relationally, for the ever-expanding, ever-consolidating, and therefore, ever-fragmenting ecosystem we call healthcare. Care coordination is not an option or some thing only certain populations need. Everyone needs help navigating the mind numbingly complicated systems we have in America and you’ve probably by now heard my magic wand for healthcare would be universal care coordination like we’re doing in Medicaid in California.
If you’ve read this far, good for you. Because you care. And while sharing means caring, caring needs outcomes to be meaningful.
Some of my most meaningful work with large health systems and payers revolves around improving and measuring our outcomes (not necessarily in that order).
Let’s talk about “outcomes-focused care”, and recognize that, like “value”, different outcomes may be important to different people so for patients and families, it may be good health, freedom from pain or addiction, or even a job. For the professionals who serve, it may mean all of these and their own well-being and pay. All good interpretations to have (and in sure I’m missing who’d torpedo “outcomes-focused”). :)
What do you think?

“Our research found that people love the promise of value-based care. They love the prospect of spending more time with their doctors, providers communicating with each other directly, and patients being treated as a whole person, instead of a collection of symptoms,” ... “However, we’re not talking about this vision effectively: no one understands what ‘value-based care’ is, and the term can make you think of cheaper and lesser quality services.” Thanks Anastassia Gliadkovskaya!
