Barge Allision Sparks Damage and Oil Spill at Pelican Island Causeway, Texas
A barge slamming into the Pelican Island Causeway in Galveston, Texas, has caused significant damage, a roadway closure, and an oil spill, officials confirm.
The incident, which unfolded around 10 a.m. local time on May 15, 2024, resulted in no reported injuries. The barge, operated by Martin Operating Partnership L.P., broke loose from the tug and struck the bridge. It’s worth noting that the captain, with a commendable 20 years of experience, was at the helm. A spill of vacuum gas oil occurred, leading to the closure of six and a half miles of the intracoastal waterway. The U.S. Coast Guard is spearheading the cleanup. While the barge has a capacity of 30,000 gallons, the leaked volume remains undisclosed, though officials assure it’s limited.
The collision briefly caused a power outage on Pelican Island, which has now been restored. The causeway, the only connection for cars to get to the island, remains closed until deemed safe. Efforts are underway to remove the barge from the site.
This incident follows the recent tragic DALI collision in Baltimore, raising concerns over bridge safety
