First, enabling flexibility: How flexible are consumers in their daily use of technologies given changes in their environment? Second, drivers and barriers of change: what are the triggers and barriers of technology adoption (PV)? How do adopters differ among themselves and how do they differ from potential and unlikely adopters? What role does technology co-adoption play? Third, connectivity and social norms: how do social networks affect technology adoption? When and how do they stabilize a transition process?   Looking forward meeting you online! When I was in education, how much energy the facilities must use didn’t cross my mind. Now I know. But I also know there’s a solution for that: Digital innovations to manage campuses more sustainably help universities to make smarter decisions, use resources efficiently, and lower their overall environmental impact. For example, we can use digital tools to control heating and cooling systems in buildings to save energy. Or use data to understand how energy is used and identify ways to use less. 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 📈 📉 Charlie Wilson got on his bike (literally!) to travel out to Laon in France for the #ECEEE Conference, lakeside in a Centre Parcs resort – who says academics are permanently glued to their keyboards! Charlie presented iDODDLE Oxford work assessing the #mechanisms through which #digitalisation impacts energy use – both for better and for worse. This combined new visualisations of impact pathways with a meta-analysis of quantitative impacts. 🔍 For full details, see the paper and presentation slide deck (links in comments). But for a teaser (and a spoiler): digital applications that clearly substitute for an energy-intensive activity have the largest net energy-saving benefits. 

Current systems engineering practices fall short of supporting modern sustainability ambitions. In this Expert Voice article, together with Dominik Bork and Gerti Kappel, we argue for promoting sustainability to a first principle in systems engineering and present the novel paradigm of "circular systems engineering" to achieve this goal. To bring this vital topic closer to researchers and practitioners, we define characteristic principles of circularity in systems engineering (end-to-end sustainability and bipartite sustainability), outline typical organizational evolution patterns, and identify key challenges and research opportunities.
