“We’ve got a problem!” Yes, a global one at it! A recent study reveals that 20-40% of UK adults remain completely unaware of teleophthalmology in eye care. While usage shows slow progress compared to the 14.2% peak during the pandemic in 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 2020. In contrast, areas like mental health, chronic disease management, and dermatology showcase impressive telemedicine adoption, averaging 40%. This highlights the need to encourage further growth in teleophthalmology within the UK actively. 𝐒𝐨, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? My focus has always been on 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 and 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬, who are crucial in promoting teleophthalmology awareness. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩: 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 on the diverse benefits of teleophthalmology, extending beyond just follow-up appointments.  𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 in essential technology and infrastructure, including secure telemedicine platforms and diagnostic tools. While some might perceive our initiative as beyond our core service, we believe it's time for recruitment agencies to contribute by offering broader support. Keratoconus is the most common corneal ectatic disorder worldwide. Currently, it accounts for nearly 30-40% of the corneal tertiary referrals, placing significant burden on the ophthalmic services. To address this issue, several innovative measures have been introduced, including the set up of virtual clinics and allied health professional (AHP)-led clinics. In our recently published article in the Eye journal, we highlight the effectiveness, safety and feasibility of AHP-led keratoconus service model (with minimal consultant support) in managing new and follow-up cases of suspected keratoconus. AHPs, including optometrists and nurse practitioners, were able to make the same correct decision as the corneal consultants in 92% of the cases!
