Long time ago, right after submitting my paper about working environment and company culture, during a transit at an airport, I couldn’t resist walking over to a coffee shop where this young man seemed so enthusiastic about his work, juggling multiple tasks simultaneously.
From taking orders with a big smile and conversations that made everyone smile back, to making great tasting coffee, and serving customers like best buddies, to managing inventory and ensuring the shop runs smoothly, he was amazing.
When I asked if that was his first job, he said it was not. At his previous job, he felt like a heartless person, constantly checked and questioned by the manager about timing, attire, cleanliness, and the way he dealt with people. Fault-finding seemed to be his manager’s favorite activity.
But here, the manager doesn’t seem like a manager in the traditional sense.
He is always keen to know what makes his team happy and how to have fun. He is always asking everyone if there is anything that can be done to make them feel good and to make the place more welcoming and enjoyable for everyone in need of a cup of coffee and a sandwich.
🎉 It’s not just the person on the job who needs to change their attitude towards their work on their own. It’s the managers, colleagues, environment, and most importantly, the culture around them that makes a difference.
Very few people have jobs that seem mundane because the environment at home or at work makes it feel that way, yet they perform them with such zest.
Others have the privilege of incredible professions of their choice and great professionals surrounding them, making their workplace a fun place, while also keeping their focus on day-to-day challenges with commitment 🏆
Is joy and enthusiasm a choice?
If so, might we choose to imbue more joy …
… even in activities that do not normally invoke joy?
