For me, as I watched the unveiling, it was a glaring example of the enormous inequity we face in this industry. Awful as well, frankly, to see the lack of diversity in leadership in the luxury segment and the lack of innovation in rankings coming from a travel and hospitality industry that promised to do better during the pandemic. . "But geographic diversity was a challenge. Drew says a strong emphasis was placed on establishing a jury with geographical diversity, to ensure that the list had the potential to reflect the entire globe and not just the major capitals that see the largest number of international visitors. Yet he conceded this was a tall order. 'It's never going to be a perfect, entirely equitable system. It's not possible to do that. The recent The Wall Street Journal story "Should You Trust a Hotel’s Star Rating? Depends Where You Look" explores how the unregulated hotel star system causes major problems in the travel industry. Kaushik Vardharajan, who spent 20 years as a hotel consultant and is now Boston University’s real estate program director, offered a solution: "Another reliable source: the independent rating system of Forbes Travel Guide, which started as Mobil Travel Guide in 1958. This guide sends incognito inspectors to review hotels using set criteria. 'If I know [the stars] are coming from the Forbes Travel Guide or…from another source that I respect, then I have a little bit more comfort in that,'” he said. Important to be able to rely on the assessments of reviewers. Are they untainted by commercial arrangements? FTG inspectors make their reports available for scrutiny by equally trustworthy travel advisors. No individual advisor can review every hotel in the world. Does yours have a collegiate network of advisors "on the ground" around the world? Do they use any external reviews like those of FTG when researching for their recommendations?
