OK, maybe Confucius didn't say this. He won't return my call so I can verify. But there's truth in the matter, isn't there? I've talked to a number of people over the years who thought that they could hire and fire their way to prosperity - and they're nearly always wrong. Turnover is EXPENSIVE. Both financially and in human costs. But there's another cost to turnover. It hurts your IMAGE. If you are always hiring salespeople, it means you're probably always LOSING salespeople - and if you are in fact growing and hiring, you need to be prepared to demonstrate that. I always felt that, once I hired someone, I had a duty to them and to myself to retain them up until I had given them every reasonable opportunity to succeed. That means good onboarding. That means quality training. That means great coaching and mentorship. And that means having a culture that is supportive and makes people want to stay. And if you do those things, you probably won't "always be hiring," unless it's because your current salespeople are kicking so much ass that they don't have bandwidth to sell more customers. A Job Search is Sales Job searching really is sales. You're selling yourself...You're the product! I have a background in over 20 years in sales and sales leadership.     When I was on a job search, my very first time, I quickly realized that what worked for me were processes that I pulled from my sales history and my sales background. That was really insightful to me, and I started teaching that to non-salespeople way back in 2016. I had to use that again when I was laid off in 2020 during the pandemic and I refined and added to it. I noticed that all the same sales techniques worked, but then I developed new techniques under that high pressure 2020 pandemic layoff timeframe. 💎 Hidden Gems 💎 Today I spoke with an individual who was a former Teacher turned Account Executive. As I got to know more about the motivation for a potential change, it became clear that a pivot into sales enablement was on the horizon. The combination of a great run in teaching along with a recent, very successful sales run is a super credible profile for what this individual wants to do next. The problem? Most firms are only key word searching for sales enablement or revenue enablement job titles. If you're struggling to fill a role, it just might be that you need to think outside the box for what "ideal" could look like. And maybe, just maybe, they could be a hidden gem that is your best hire yet.

Attitude has to be one of the MOST important considerations when hiring in sales. Skills can be taught, but having the right mindset is a personal choice. It’s crazy how often this gets overlooked, especially in this market. Of course, everyone wants a quick win, but short-term thinking only gets you short-term rewards. A long-term plan cut short.🙈 Navigating the job market can be tough, especially when looking for the perfect role that matches your skill set. I took my time to ensure everything was right —the position, product, team, culture, etc. I asked plenty of questions during the interviews to be thorough and make sure I was on the right path. A promising start. Starting a new, not previously existing role (full sales cycle) within a growing company, things were a bit more unpredictable. The first day, first demo was booked, and from here on, it was smooth sailing getting up to speed. The team was great, and colleagues were incredibly supportive. Being part of a small team allowed me to test new strategies and accelerate the sales process and start working towards the set goals. 8 weeks in, I received a call informing me that my position was eliminated. Without any prior feedback on the progress during this time.... 🙌 Despite the abrupt end, the meetings I booked, new outreach methods, and successful demos led to deals closing even after I left. (A win is a win!) 😅 However, expecting miracles in just two months is unrealistic. It's unprofessional, a gamble, and a waste of time for everyone involved. 🔥 Let's hire with a clear plan and realistic goals. 𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺! Couple of years back one of my clients struggled getting good sales resources. We interviewed a bunch of them and boiled down on three. Here are the classification of the three. 1. Highly experienced, less motivated 2. Highly Skilled, lacks energy 3. Less experienced, less skilled desperately motivated 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝗿𝗱. Few years back, in my second job where I managed a small team. My boss hired a resource with no skills to the job. I asked him "Boss, what is this? he wouldnt fit in this role at all" he said "I dont know Maran, my gut feel says it will work" That guy went on to close one of the largest deal for the company. So when hired the 3rd type of the resource we didn't apply any rule book of hiring, just went by a simple gut feel. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺. I always believed human mind performs better when its desperate. It finds motivation becomes coachable and most of the times trains itself. By the way, the resource we hired is giving us more prospect a month than the top experienced sales guys we hired over the years. Conclusion: Look for attitude! I frequently get asked, How did I get in Sales? Back in 2010, I stumbled into sales while searching for part-time work to support my education. It was meant to be a temporary fix, but from the moment I started, I was hooked. From making cold calls and facing countless hang-ups to crafting persuasive emails and landing clients, every aspect of the sales process fascinated me. I was drawn to the numbers, and the thrill of generating revenue only fueled me further. Moving around from one sales job to another, I eventually found TRG. It was here that I truly began to flourish as a sales professional. The environment, the challenges, and the opportunities for growth molded me into the person I am today. But I didn't navigate this journey alone. The guidance, mentorship, and leadership I received along the way were instrumental to my development. Without the support of those who believed in me, I wouldn't be where I am today. From making sales calls to mentoring others, from supervising teams to leading as a manager, every role I've held has been a valuable learning experience. Each interaction, each challenge, and each success has shaped me and deepened my understanding of sales. Looking back, I realize that what started as a temporary gig has blossomed into a passionate career.
