Each year, World Doula Week begins with World Doula Day on March 22 and goes through March 28. Doulas, midwives, and other birth workers play a key role in ensuring women, birthing people, and babies are provided with the essential care required during pregnancy and after birth. Evidence suggests that community-based doula programs can reduce or eliminate health disparities by providing support to women most at risk for poor outcomes. Learn more about what doulas do and how you can support them in your community by reaching out to local doulas, birth advocates, midwifery practices. #theshadesofmotherhoodnetwork #indigenousbirthjustice Join #NICHQ in honoring the important contributions of doulas to the maternal and child health field. #WorldDoulaWeek

**Updated by the UK National Health Service in April 2024. Please pause and think about the UK approach to supporting choices in childbirth. Read their public facing document. “Find out what's in your area. Your midwife will discuss the options available in your area but if you're willing to travel, you're free to choose any maternity services.” How is it that a country (and surrounding national Trusts) with over 1 million deliveries during 2022-23 recognizes the midwife as the entry into care. The midwife supports/assess/directs the family on all options, and the midwives attend the majority of births. How is it that UK families have better outcomes than the US? https://lnkd.in/gxj6Ddk7... Outcomes across UK urban and rural region: Cesarean rate 23% Epidural rate 12% First prenatal visit within first 12 weeks 77% Induction rate 33% Maternal mortality 13.41/100,000 Do you have an explanation as to why the US is unwilling to mainstream midwifery? This is just one example from the European countries. #GrowMidwives #scalingupandsustainingmidwifery #stoptheresearch #fundtheanswers https://shorturl.at/pT9PQ

Midwives save lives by providing essential sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health services. When disasters such as climate events or conflict strike, midwives are most often the first responders for women, representing the single-most effective way to avoid preventable maternal deaths. On Sunday’s International Day of the Midwife, we join United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in thanking these heroes around the world, and calling for greater investments in midwifery to ensure access to maternal healthcare for all. https://lnkd.in/gpZaXBeK

As described by the Lancet Maternal Health Series 2020, “‘too much, too soon’ means care before, during and after childbirth that is too much, unnecessary, inappropriate, and possibly even harmful.” The judicious and appropriate use of interventions during pregnancy and childbirth can be critical and life-saving. However, the routine over-medicalisation of pregnancy and birth, by the unnecessary use or overuse of non-evidence-based interventions can be extremely harmful for the mother and child, often resulting in unnecessary morbidity, increased c-section rates and increased costs. Mitigating this global health challenge requires finding a delicate balance that prioritises the needs of the mother – the central focus of the midwifery model of care. The midwifery model of care prioritises physiologic childbirth and Respectful Maternity Care, and acknowledges that pregnancy and labour are not diseases that require treatment. Birth Centres - A Should-Have, Not A Could-Have. This was an incredibly insightful fireside chat featuring Leseliey Welch, MBA, MPH and Adimika Arthur. Key takeaways: ➡ Financial literacy around birth centres needs to be improved - birth centres and at-home births are actually more cost effective than in hospital births. ➡ Midwives challenge the power dynamic in the current healthcare system which may explain their lack of implementation, despite evidence that midwifery-centred care could improve outcomes. #midwifery #maternalcare #futureofmaternalcare
