Republic First Bankcorp's downfall represents a unique case in the banking sector, triggered by a series of internal challenges and external pressures. The Philadelphia-based bank experienced significant declines in deposits and faced substantial setbacks in its mortgage lending operations, exacerbated by rising interest rates. Efforts to stabilize the bank through a $35Mn capital infusion from the Norcross-Braca Group fell through when the bank failed to meet key conditions, including holding a scheduled shareholder meeting. These compounded issues led to the intervention by the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, who appointed Fulton Bank to assume control. This acquisition includes taking over Republic First’s 32 branches across Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey, which will reopen under the Fulton Bank banner.
