It was great experience hosting Vikram for a tête-à-tête session on Innovation. Innovation is a topic very close to my heart and I couldn't have let this opportunity pass :). What a year of changes & challenges for my former companies: - Lazada just let go a sizeable amount of its management and leadership team to continue cutting down headcount cost. - Jumia Group stopped its food delivery business last month after closing its Dubai HQ last year and changing its leadership team entirely in all countries. - Opontia pulled out from 3 out of 4 markets, sold off brands and is fighting for survival against the odds in a currency depreciating market (Turkey). Investment climate and overall markets have changed (no news), growth must be in line with profitability, or your company needs a sustainable long term strategy (and a trend to proof it's on the right track) to achieve that. But more importantly, as an employee, you need to be ready that change can happen any time(!). Not only companies need to have game plans for different scenarios - you yourself need to work on your game plan rather sooner than later. Especially if you see that your company is currently not on stable grounds, make sure you look around, network, keep yourself busy understanding opportunities in the job market. Don't get caught in surprise... My game plan was to start my own company if Opontia doesn't succeed - and here we are: 2024 is a complete restart for myself, in a new industry (beauty and aesthetics) with great business partners in an exciting market (Middle East and East Africa).

During my recent trip to Vietnam, I made an interesting discovery at the supermarket: there's no maximum retail price labeled on products. This became evident when I noticed that the price of a Coke bottle varied significantly, ranging from 35,000 Vietnamese dong (VND) in some areas to a mere 10,000 VND elsewhere, (cheaper than water). The Indian in me was naturally curious to determine the true value of the product. However, to my surprise, uncovering this proved to be more complex than expected. Unlike in countries such as India, Bangladesh, and Indonesia where the concept of Maximum Retail Price (MRP) is common practice, Vietnam operates differently. Here, product pricing is heavily influenced by location. In bustling tourist hubs, prices soar to exorbitant heights, whereas venturing beyond the city limits or exploring local markets often reveals more pocket-friendly options. It's tempting to embark on a quest for the best bargain, but trust me, it's a pursuit that can lead you down a rabbit hole of price discrepancies and cultural insights (a lesson I learned firsthand 😏 ).
