I put together a stylized map of membership by region in International Association of Hyperpolyglots (HYPIA). There are more than 360 members from more than 60 countries represented.
My notes:
- The world map can be trifurcated into the Americas, Europe, and RoW (Asia, Africa, and Oceania).
- One dot *roughly* represents 5 members.
- The eight most prominent nationalities are the United States, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Poland, Mexico, Argentina, and Germany. In other words, many good football teams (?)(!)
- Out of the world's ten largest countries by population, only the US and Brazil are prominent. India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia, and Japan are all underrepresented, or even unrepresented!
- Many members have multiple nationalities. To avoid double counting, the less represented of nationalities was picked. So an Indo-Canadian would count as Indian, or a Macedonian-German would be Macedonian.
- North America is US & Canada, Central America is from the Rio Grande to the Panama Canal, plus all of Caricom. Western Europe includes UK, Suisse, and Scandinavians. Central & Eastern Europe includes Austria, the Baltics, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, etc. Southern Europe includes Mediterranean minus France, along with Balkans. Middle East extends from Morocco till Iran including Israel. Oceania is exclusively represented by Australia.
- Data has been systematically compiled by HYPIA Senior Director Matias Barmat
