We believe sustainable automotive industry transformation is impossible without engaging external stakeholders, agencies, and institutes. This is why Yanfeng is proud to be part of the Future Lab “Circular Value Creation” of IN4climate.RR since 2022. IN4climate.RR is a joint project of the NRW.Energy4Climate state agency and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy Institute and is closely interlinked with the IN4climate.NRW initiative. The IN4climate.RR team supports companies like Yanfeng, located in the Rhenish Revier (RR) region of Germany, with projects on the way to reach net-zero emissions. Recently, a consortium of vehicle circularity experts (including representatives from encory and Interzero) met at Yanfeng’s Innovation Center at our EMEA HQ in Neuss. The goal of the workshop was to gain more insight into circularity for vehicle interior components. Yanfeng Sustainability, Innovation, and Seating colleagues, as well as external experts focused on the end of the product lifecycle took part in a day-long workshop. These experts were asked to share their knowledge and identify how to make vehicle components more circular in the future. In the workshop, the structure of an exemplary component was analyzed, and broken down into its components. Discussion followed about potential joining methods, material selection, dismantling effort, and the condition of the components at the time of disposal. This was supplemented by input on current recycling processes and their limitations. The challenges, possible solutions, and next steps were compiled and will be discussed and further explored in upcoming meetings. In the future, the consortium will be open to other relevant partners from different economic sectors to enable a circular economy in the global automotive industry jointly. The overarching goal is to identify challenges and develop corresponding innovative solutions and business models for circularity. #Sustainability #Automotive #IN4Climate

【Day 1 of group work on the subject of circular economy at the German-Japanese Youth Summit】🔄🇩🇪🇯🇵 Deutsch-Japanische Jugendgesellschaft e.V. On the first day of the exchange programme, we had the pleasure of getting an introduction to our project topic by Ronja Scholz from Circular Berlin. She explained why the shift to a circular economy is necessary and which models of circular economy are currently discussed, as well as circular design strategies and business models. Thank you, Ronja! Together, we compared some aspects of consumption in Japan and Germany. In three teams, we did an exercise at which we developed our vision of a circular city divided into public space, food, as well as consumption & products. Two ideas that I had during the exercise were: 🪛 Municipal repair centres and a right to repair: There shouldn‘t be the need of buying something new just because the repair would be more expensive. That‘s why companies which produce and retail electric devices (and perhaps other products also) would pay a fee from which municipals would run repair centres where broken devices would be repaired. 🗑️ „Return bins“ instead of dust bins: Groceries are sold unpacked or in reusable containers. Instead of dust bins, there are “return bins” for standardised packaging everywhere. These are emptied daily and the containers cleaned and collected in the city‘s packaging pool where all shops in the city have access to. In a circular city, there wouldn‘t be the need for rubbish bins. I’m often asked why design matters in a circular economy. Generally speaking, people still think circular economy from the end like „What to do with the product when it becomes waste?“. But whether and when a product becomes waste is mainly determined by its design ➡️ 80 % of a product's environmental impact and cost is determined by its design. Design for a circular economy narrows, slows, closes and regenerates material and energy flows. Paving the way towards a more circular future Electronic Reuse and Recycling is working hard to prolong the life of our discarded but still very functional electronic hardware. Having a strong partnership and setup for collecting and repairing what we throw away, the main problem is actually getting us consumers to consider buying used electronics instead of new. “We all have a responsibility to limit our resource consumption. We need to change our mindset so that the products we dispose of are no longer seen as waste, but instead as valuable items to be integrated into the circular economy. This is essential for achieving a more sustainable development. We need to consume fewer resources, and we can do that by reusing more. Therefore, it is very important that the purchase of used electronics also becomes part of the Danish consumer's mindset when, for example, we need to buy a drill or something for our kitchen. When our facility is fully built, we will annually extract approximately 60,000 units for reuse. We would like to contribute to 'cracking the code' on how to get Danish consumers and Danish companies to think about reuse before they think about buying new.
