One of the reasons why I feel it as my mission to bring art to people (and vice versa) is its power to move us deeply... art is a portal through which we can take an empathic look into the world of the artist and curator and also to our own psyche. Walking through an exhibition with a dedicated guide or just wondering on your own can be a journey through ideas and emotions, stories and layers of interpretation. The physicality of the exhibition space and the opportunity to experience art fully, with all of our senses, creates a very special place of contemplation and conversation. So I wrote about it in "Õpetajate leht". You can also order a personal tour at Tallinn Art Hall. I have created a unique kind of format called "Tour of relaxed observation" ("Väga rahuliku vaatamise ringkäik). In it, we take time to become present in ourselves, allowing the mind to relax, thus becoming more perceptive and sensitive to the subtler nuances of art. During the 1,5h, you will hear about the fascinating back-stories of the works and the exhibition in general. You will also have time to become aware of what is happening within, thus creating a deep experience. Isaac Chong Wai's Falling Reversely, a performance piece and video installations combo, is part of Strangers Everywhere, the main thematic exhibition at Venice Biennale 2024. Chong has been exploring the act of falling as a performance trope for a long time, and his Venice Biennale project is premised on the rise of 'Asian hate' soon after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the piece emerged as a result of a series of painful real-life experiences, the artist doesn't fail to highlight the fact that on certain levels, violence issuing out of racial prejudice is utterly ridiculous. My article also includes a focus on Man Fung-yi's video installation, Microcosmic Landscape, showing at a European Cultural Centre-hosted exhibition at the Biennale. Borrowing from a Taoist practice, Man drew circles every day all through an entire year, during the height of the pandemic, only to burn them all and have the ashes framed. Great video to watch

My six-year period on the board of Frame Contemporary Art Finland (Frame-säätiö), serving as its chairperson, will conclude within a week. Over these six years, a lot has happened globally (including pandemics, wars, etc.). We have overcome all challenges so far, Finnish art has been promoted internationally, and the Finnish pavilion at the Venice Biennale is open once again. Board work is, of course, always board work, but these six years have been enlightening. Art is and has become a big part of who I am. In certain aspects, the art world is significantly ahead of the business world, and what happens in art today will be recognized in business a few years from now. 🎨🎨🚀🚀

“Peter Callesen uses simple sheets of paper to form beautiful works of art. He says the thin white paper gives the paper sculptures a frailty that underlines the tragic and romantic theme of his works." To continue with the theme of non-traditional materials and methods of making #art, I came across this video highlighting Callesen and his paper sculptures. I find it fascinating what he makes with one sheet of paper. Today's suggested student activity is to have students watch the video for inspiration and then, challenge them to see what they can make using one sheet of plain white paper. If they have difficulty coming up with an idea, ask them to think about something delicate and beautiful. They can try to make that. Has anyone ever made paper sculptures with their students?
