METREX network supports sustainable freight transport plan for Metropolitan City of Milan The final event of a series during which METREX Members have been informing the Città metropolitana di Milano's new sustainable freight transport plan (PULS) will take place in Milan on 5 and 6 October 2023. The Metropolitan City of Milan and a number of cross-sector partners are developing a new sustainable freight transport plan for the future of the region and beyond. The so-called PULS plan will work towards ensuring that the strategically-important Rhine-Alpine corridor becomes carbon neutral, as well as delivering safer, more reliable and efficient “last mile” logistics systems. PULS also responds to the aims of the European Commission, which says that “the recovery from the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic should be used to accelerate the decarbonisation and modernisation of the entire transport and mobility system”. The concept of circular economy is not new and appeared as a potential policy goal in the late 1970s. While the need to adopt the concept has gained in importance, practical implementation has been limited generally, including in the highways sector. The CERCOM consortium, which is led by ITEN members, Research Driven Solutions, will develop a framework for National Road Authorities throughout Europe to facilitate the adoption of Circular Economy practices through procurement of road construction and maintenance activities. > https://buff.ly/385rBNc #transport #automated #circulareconomy #sustainability

Approximately 2 trillion euros is spent every year by over 250 000 public authorities on the purchase of services, works and supplies from private companies in the EU. A Eurostat survey of 2010 pointed out that more than 80% of the people supports public tenders where the selected project can be more expensive (than other offers) if they take social & ecological indicators better into account. Yet a recent report of the European Parliament (The Social Impact of Public Procurement) points out that over half of the EU public tenders only uses price as a criterion (!). This implies that quality criteria, social, environmental and innovation considerations are not included in tender documents. That’s why it’s incredibly important to leverage these public funds towards a circular approach (both in services, supplies, as in re-construction works & material use). The Brussels Government has already taken quite a few steps on this (citydev.brussels f.e. prescribing re-use in GreenBizz II, the Société d’Aménagement Urbain - Maatschappij voor Stedelijke Inrichting - with great examples as Usquare and upcoming Magasin 4,…) but this approach needs to become mainstream in many departments, public organisations, and levels (f.e. the federal Belgian level) so these massive funds can help apply the most sustainable, carbon-decreasing approach, pioneer with exemplary materials, standardize the uptake, and create (circular) capacity among contractors & construction companies. Public players should set the bar. We’re hoping the new government agreements will reflect this approach 🙏 . Feel free to share and/or tag (your local) authorities. It's never been more important than now to give weight to the Green Deal, and fully implement the Circular Economy Package ✊ . Dear Friends, I’m happy to share with you another recently published paper. In this research, we perform a structured literature review of the potential impacts of Electric Vehicles on sustainable road-freight transport operations, including in urban areas. Thanks a lot to the great team of researchers who made this research possible, with the lead effort of our great friends and researchers Frank Alarcón and Enzo Sauma This work aims to fill this gap by presenting a systematic literature review (SLR) of the potential impacts of EVs on sustainable road-freight transport operations, including in urban areas. We reviewed 237 peer-reviewed articles for bibliometric and literature classification analysis, whereby 119 articles were subsequently studied for content analysis and research gaps related to sustainability approaches. The bibliometric analysis showed significant growth in the body of research in the past two years, reflected in the number of journal papers, authors, and references. In the literature and keywords analysis, we identified five main categories and research areas: economic and competitive aspects, city logistics, environmental sustainability, vehicle fleet operations, and infrastructure and technology. In addition, this paper revealed eight key research gaps for future research: multimodal integration, long-haul and heavy-duty truck approaches, emerging economies, business models, social factors, charging infrastructure inclusion, and fleet replacement policies. These findings can enlighten researchers and practitioners toward sustainable research and real-life applications of electromobility in freight logistics.
