Our Executive Managing Director, Paul Chandler (He/Him), this week’s Construction News Forecasting Conference alongside Swati Paul from Skanska and Tony Gates from Sir Robert McAlpine. Chaired by Sam Stacey from Stacx, the panel discussed ‘The Evolving Business Models in Construction’, focusing on the rapidly evolving role of contractors in UK construction and the innovative approaches being adopted to position the industry for success. Paul shared his views on the need for industry disruption, drawing on our Alliance model to deliver the Ministry of Justice UK's A4NP Programme - a culture shift for the industry involving transparent knowledge sharing between four main contractors. He also discussed our construction target of 65% Pre-Manufactured Value, which was put in place for us to deliver greater efficiency and predictability and with a default to use our Prism offsite manufacturing facility to support this. The biggest focus of the session was around technology and its enormous potential to disrupt the construction industry, acting as a catalyst for change in terms of project delivery and the skills we employ to apply it. "By embracing technology and the power of data we can transform the way we make decisions and operate - creating improvements in quality, predictability, and productivity. Thanks to the Offsite Alliance for inviting me to be part of a panel at UK Construction Week - it was great to share a stage with Emily King, Trudi Sully, Richard Green and Dan Macpherson MRICS. Our session was called "Falling down, rising up: confronting market risks in construction." An enjoyable chat, we covered a broad range of topics including: - how businesses can break the bad news cycle and build a positive #reputation - the limitations of #collaboration if people are too protective (of data, IP, methodology, etc) - the opportunities for #construction businesses to reposition and take a lead on issues now, rather than waiting for a general election - the dangers of relying on a published pipeline - great examples of #innovation happening in the sector (and how these are helping businesses address challenges including skills shortages, tight margins, quality control, building safety and more).
