I’d also like to to thank all of the brave people who gave their lives to obtain and keep our independence for the last 248 years. Original Declaration (link below to read all of it): WHEN in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation. We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—-That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. The History of the present King of Great-Britain is a History of repeated Injuries and Usurpations, all having in direct Object the Establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid World. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public Good. He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing Importance, unless suspended in their Operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People, unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only. What do you really know about our nation's presidents? Personally, I am not someone who knows/knew very much - but after reading this book, I at least feel a bit more informed about how this nation began and I had a few takeaways from this arduous undertaking (I think my longest book since Gone with the Wind in 6th grade 😂 ) - Takeaway 1: not everyone in America believed in the Revolution. There was a group of people who sided with the British, and the military fighting for freedom did so without a whole lot of support from the American people or government. - Takeaway 2: not everyone loved the constitution. It was only through discourse about opposing opinions, and essentially 'marketing' that the document passed, but it wasn't even unanimous. - Takeaway 3: Washington, who had proved time and time again that he was serving his country through a lens of fairness, humbleness, and passion for the longterm vision of the country, had a group of people who didn't trust him, actively spread lies about him through biased media, and divided the country. If he had wanted the power this group said he was desperate for, he could have taken it... but even though his actions showed very little ego or desire for power, people thought what they wanted to. The biggest takeaway for me was, the launch of this country doesn't seem all that different than where we are now, (with the exception of being able to discuss opposing viewpoints, unfortunately). It gave me a bit of comfort that if nothing else, we as a county have overcome all the odds stacked against us time and time again - and it gives me hope that no matter the state of the things now, we will come out on the other side in tact. On this President's day, I remain grateful for our first President and the example he set for the entire country. I hope we all continue to work towards unity, and the powerful longterm vision of liberty and justice for all. PS. thank you to the broadway show #Hamilton for getting me the least bit interested in history in the first place, without which I never would have picked up this book! #presidentsday #equality
