Exploring Bavaria's cutting-edge computing infrastructure and its role in AI 🔎 🔹 €55 Million Boost for Computing Power With a €55 million investment from the Bavarian State Government, the computational resources at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) and Erlangen National High Performance Computing Center (NHR@FAU) Center are being significantly upgraded. This addition of state-of-the-art GPUs will enhance processing capabilities, enabling more complex AI experiments, and accelerating breakthroughs across various scientific disciplines. 🔹 SuperMUC-NG: Powering AI Excellence Bavaria is home to Germany's second most powerful supercomputer with 26.9 PetaFlop/s, SuperMUC-NG, located in Garching. It is soon to be joined by its younger ‘twin’, SuperMUC-NG2. This infrastructure supports complex AI applications of various Bavarian research instututions, driving innovations across various sectors from healthcare to autonomous driving. 🔹 Expansion of State Data Centers Adding to the existing network of seven state-run data centres across all of Bavaria, a new facility is being constructed in Marktschwaben. This expansion is crucial for supporting the growing computing demands of the public sector. The new centre will provide vital infrastructure for governmental applications, ensuring that Bavaria remains at the forefront of technological application. 🔹 Creating Jobs and Driving Growth Bavaria’s compute infrastructure is a catalyst for both scientific and economic growth. 20,000 people have worked in Bavarian computing centres in 2022, and due to advantageous environmental conditions like the low chance of extreme weather events and good economic outlooks, the sector is expecting continued expansion. By prioritizing advanced infrastructure, Bavaria is not only boosting its technological capabilities but also strengthening its economic and strategic position in the global AI landscape! Exciting news coming out of University of Bristol as it announces that the UK’s most powerful and sustainable supercomputer, #Isambard-AI, is now up and running! The UK government’s Minister for AI, Viscount Camrose, has said the launch of Isambard AI marks a “groundbreaking moment for UK science, innovation, and technology”. Denmark will soon boast on of the worlds most powerful AI supercomputers! Novo Nordisk Foundation and Export and Investment Fund of Denmark are joining forces together with NVIDIA to build an AI super computer in Denmark. This computer will allow academics and industry in Denmark, to gain access to one of the worlds most powerful tools in tackling societal challenges. The AI supercomputer will be powered by Nvidia hardware and software, to tackle issues on climate change, agriculture, health care, and life sciences. Denmark has long been a key player for life sciences, renewable energy, and other industries, but has lacked the infrastructure to tackle high powered AI projects to speed things up. The aim is to have pilot-projects already running by the end of the year! Novo Nordisk Foundation has contributed around DKK 600mil ($87.4m) and Export and Innovation Fund of Denmark DKK 100mil ($14.6m) What do you think? #Lightspeed computing could change the world of computing? The founders of Lightmatter seem to think so. Three MIT alumni are using photonic technologies to reinvent how chips communicate and calculate. Exciting stuff so read all about it. How does it work? “With photonics, you can perform multiple calculations at the same time because the data is coming in on different colors of light,” Harris explains. “In one color, you could have a photo of a dog. In another color, you could have a photo of a cat. In another color, maybe a tree, and you could have all three of those operations going through the same optical computing unit, this matrix accelerator, at the same time.
