Our second 3RsC TDB Thursday will focus on the benefits of these Translational Digital Biomarkers for the 3Rs. TDB are digital technologies that collect physiological and behavioural data from research animals. These technologies can: 1. Refine animal's lives while they are being used for research. 2. Reduce the number of animals necessary for each experiment. 3. Collect data continuously, longitudonally and non-invasively. 4. Increase translatability from preclinical to human data. 5. 🧬 Heading home from a riveting week in Munich at #BioEurope2023. The meeting kicked-off with an opening plenary session on #AI and #healthcare, moderated by Sofinnova's Simon Turner, Partner with the firm's newly-minted Digital Medicine Fund, recently closed at $200 million. Simon was joined on stage by Thomas Clozel, Owkin and Najat Khan, PhD, Johnson & Johnson, exploring AI's expansive role in making healthcare more patient-centric. The discussions touched on AI's impact beyond #drugdiscovery, the outlook for #precisionmedicine, and the efficiency and cost savings new information technologies can bring. Thomas gave a shoutout to Sofinnova for being one of the few bilingual players in the space – able to speak two “languages” – #biotech and #infotech. 🙏 Graziano Seghezzi, Managing Partner at Sofinnova, also took to the stage to offer a distinct perspective on the art of #dealmaking as part of a panel moderated by Anton Gueth from EVOLUTION Life Science Partners and Evonne Sepsis from ESC Advisors. He was joined by pharma representatives Guillaume Vignon from Novartis and John McDonald from Novo Nordisk. Graziano described what it is like to embody the dual role of buyer and seller, a dichotomy that makes the job of a venture capitalist unique and complex, especially in the current market landscape. Finally, our portfolio company CEO Dr. Franz MJ Pfister, MD, MBA of deepc spoke about AI and Big Data with BioM’s Ralf Huss. 'A New National Purpose: Leading the Biotech Revolution is a joint report by Tony Blair and William Hague.' Congratulations to the team of authors who have put forward such an ambitious vision for the United Kingdom. The challenge as always will be whether a future government will be bold enough/have the bandwidth to enact the recommendations in this report. Some key points: Focus is key: 'This report is not intended to be a comprehensive life-sciences strategy or an industry analysis that addresses every area of biotech. Instead, it highlights critical areas of focus for Britain: 1. how we can seize the global opportunity that biotech represents in the AI era; 2. how data can be harnessed better to drive research and help create AI doctors that can complement GPs’ expertise by acting as personalised health advisors; 3. what we should do to become home to the next generation of superstar companies; and 4. how to keep ourselves and the rest of the world safe from global biothreats.' Reimagining the shape of the state to deliver focused objectives: 'Some recommendations are technical solutions to the policy and organisational problems biotech faces in the UK, but they feed into the broader theme of how strategic application of innovation and the right infrastructure can power a reimagined state in which people lead better, longer, safer lives.
