Comprehensive as always from SportBusiness... Personal reflection is I'm disappointed Amazon didn't stay in the game. We've still got the Boxing Day fixtures to come, but off the back of APV's latest round of midweek fixtures, I'll miss them next season, following on from the news that they ultimately didn't enter the auction for the next cycle of domestic Premier League rights. Whether because they got squeezed out by reduced number of packages or didn't want to massively multiply their investment to broadcast EPL football, I've enjoyed the past few seasons of what feels more like a US experience of watching sport, flicking between concurrent matches depending on the state of the games. And any broadcaster who gets Clive Tyldesley and Ally McCoist is doing something right, in my opinion! Perhaps it's unsurprising they didn't participate in the auction, given the increased costs involved. As this articles details, in this current cycle they've paid just £20m per season for 20 live matches. Compare that to Sky's £1.2bn bill for 128 matches or TNT Sport paying £325m for 52 matches. In a world in which we're still waiting for the FAANG giants to really commit to live sports broadcasting, this felt like the best tactical dipping-toe-in-water so far, driving Prime membership at a crucial retail moment in the build up to Christmas and with Boxing Day sales.
Sky will increase its Premier League rights spending to close to £1.275bn per season from 2025-26 to 2028-29, SportBusiness Media understands. Meanwhile, TNT Sports and the BBC are understood to have kept their fees flat for the next cycle. FREE TO READ 👉 https://lnkd.in/e3iERQbc

Big story coming out of France. CANAL Group informing the French Professional Football League (LFP) that it will not bid during its domestic rights tender, only a few weeks before the deadline. With high reserve prices in excess of €800m ($850m) for the main domestic packages being mentioned this won't help the process. Will this now mean Amazon doubling down on its commitment to French football or DAZN making a substantial move (despite making a reported 102 redundancies in the last week)? There is a huge challenge now for LFP to get close to their €1BN target, given Canal's withdraw, lack of competitive tension in the broadcast market, the departure of major stars and the uncertain future of Mbappe. A broader level we have also seen Serie A pause its domestic rights sale process due to low offers - its a tough market, and thorough analysis and proper valuation needs to be undertaken to understand the true value of these rights if rights holders are not to get caught out in the future. #mediarights #sportsbiz https://lnkd.in/eSSTkWar

Multi-Award-Winning Disability Inclusion & Accessibility Consultant. Broadcaster. Most Influential Disabled Person in the UK.
Today, South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) starts, and Disability Pride Month continues - all my worlds and identities colliding! This summer is about more than SAHM and Disability Pride Month; we also have the long-awaited 2024 Paralympics. But this is why I feel especially disheartened. The announcement of the Paralympic presenters for 2024 once again reveals a significant over-exclusion of South Asian representation. South Asians make up the second largest population in the UK and are more likely to experience disability than other ethnic groups. This ongoing erasure isn’t just disheartening; it underscores the critical need for representation that authentically reflects the rich diversity of our society. The impact of this over-exclusion sends a message that our contributions, our stories, and our identities are not valued. It only perpetuates a cycle of erasure within an already oppressed community, where our needs remain unmet because our intersection of race, ethnicity and disability is ignored. In South Asian culture, disability faces a further sense of stigma and is deeply rooted in shame, perceived as a reflection of family honour and personal worth. Disabilities are linked to past misdeeds or karma, reinforcing feelings of individual or familial guilt. Navigating these complexities within the South Asian community, let alone the wider disability community, underscores the need for collective support and advocacy to uplift and educate. South Asian’s also need access to role models and representation that affirm our identities in all spheres of life, particularly in events that celebrate resilience and the human spirit, such as the Paralympics. Ironically, this year’s SAHM theme is “Free to Be Me.” How can we feel truly free to be ourselves when we’re still fighting for visibility in spaces that exclude us? “Nothing about us, without us” - the well-known slogan in disability rights activism, sadly remains a fallacy for some of us. #Paralympics2024 #DisabilityPrideMonth #RepresentationMatters #SouthAsianHeritageMonth

Hyperinflation! The Premier League has agreed a new deal with Sky and TNT Sports Camp that will see the competition earn £6.7bn over four years for its UK TV rights. In a swift resolution to what had been a highly-anticipated process, the Premier League has renewed terms with its trusted broadcast partners and effectively kept its revenues stable, although the number of live games is set to grow substantially. All fixtures that kick-off at 2pm on a Sunday will, for instance, now be broadcast live. Sky has secured four of the five packages on sale, meaning a minimum of 215 live matches, including all 10 fixtures on the final day of the season. TNT will screen 52 matches, while Match of the Day will continue after the BBC bought the rights to a weekly highlights package. The deal, which commences from the start of the 2025-2026 season and runs until the end of the 2028-29 campaign, has been hailed by the Premier League as being “the largest sports media rights deals ever concluded in the UK” The BBC has also been awarded additional digital rights for its online platforms. #TNTSports #BBC #Skysports #football #news #PL #premierleague #broadcasting #media #footballbusiness #footballindustry #footballrevenue
