AGECAG Inc. – Against unpaid internships Did you know that most college and university interns, around 84 percent to be precise, remain unpaid for their work? Of this high percentage, 72 percent are women. These internships are typically conditional on graduation, and the intern is required to perform tasks that are similar to those of an employee. Even though it is labelled as an apprenticeship, the intern often ends up replacing an employee, especially in areas facing a labour shortage. As living expenses are skyrocketing, financial instability is becoming a major concern to those interns. For students who support themselves, it is nearly impossible to juggle internships, which can last up to 40 hours a week, courses, and part-time work without sacrificing their mental and physical health. Seeing this issue, my students' association collected hundreds of signatures to make this issue heard at the National Assembly of Québec. We are strongly hoping to see a positive change soon!

My DMs have kinda popped off on the topic of interns "Where can I get free interns too?" "How do you find interns?" "Can you hook me up?" First: *They're not FREE* They’re paid above national living wage (which is higher than minimum wage) Second: There's a world of early stage career talent out there. And IMO you have to take the time to properly review their CVs, be inclusive in your recruitment & onboarding. Plus working with interns requires your time & investment to train, support, lead, feedback to and develop them. IMO it's not a "how can I squeeze this intern resource dry" situation. It's a "how can I support these early careers people to develop their skills, feel supported as they learn, fail fast and tap into their potential?" Third: Most unis have internship programmes. They're all set up differently, with different criteria, timeframes, eligibility, processes. Making internships paid can also facilitate organizations requiring more targeted skills, such as language ability. And when the World Economic Forum report shows multilingualism as one of the top 20 skills for jobs in the next 5 years, how valuable, then, becomes an official certification or measure of language ability. #languageskills #bilingualtalent #multilingualism
