August 9, 2003, a day etched in my memory. Wide-eyed and full of anticipation, a 23-year-old Vaibhav stepped onto a plane for the first time, leaving Mumbai behind for the bustling city of Detroit. My destination? Bloomington, IL, where I'd begin my work at State Farm Insurance for Patni Computer Systems. It was an exhilarating adventure, a coming-of-age moment that would unknowingly set me on an unexpected path. Little did I know that my arrival in the U.S. would also bring a curious twist of fate. In India, I'd always been known simply as "Vaibhav," a single name carrying my legal identity. But in the U.S., a land of mandatory last names, my identity was suddenly reconfigured. My visa, the key to my new life, bore the peculiar name "FNU Vaibhav." First Name Unknown? What was the need for that extra "N"? A humorous quirk at the time, it later dawned on me that this was now my legal identity in this new country. My Social Security number, driver's license, bank accounts - all bore this altered name. The amusement of my friends was inevitable, and I can only imagine the challenges this presented to the less-than-mature identity verification systems of the time. Looking back, I realize that those early experiences with identity verification sparked a lifelong passion. My career has since revolved around fixing the very issues I encountered. Even now, seated in Australia, my mind continues to grapple with these challenges. Sharing my new book, "The Last Name Game: A Global Identity Crisis." While the story is fictional, it's inspired by my own experiences navigating the complexities of identity in a globalized world.
