V2G technology benefits the EV industry by making electric vehicles more efficient, affordable, and sustainable. It enhances energy resilience and cost savings, especially for electric school buses and fleet operators, by reducing costs and charging times. This drives a greener future and supports global energy storage projects. Perhaps most stunning will be energy / electrons becoming egalitarian with time of use arbitrage. Electron good vibrations becoming the the more real than crypto global alternative currency.

Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have achieved a breakthrough in wireless EV charging, reaching a power level of 100 kilowatts with their magnetic coils, which allowed a Hyundai Kona EV to gain 50% battery charge, translating to about 150 kilometers of range, in under 20 minutes. This advancement is part of a decade-long effort to develop wireless charging technology, with companies like WiTricity and Electreon making significant strides. The Oak Ridge team envisions these systems being integrated into parking spaces for convenient charging during short stops, and they are working on enhancing the system’s energy transfer efficiency. Meanwhile, Electreon’s electrified roads in Europe demonstrate the potential for dynamic charging to reduce battery size and extend battery life.

This upcoming paper is a product of almost 7 months of continuous experimental work with electric vehicles (EVs) - 38 different models from the last 11 years. Hence, it should be a full meal to please everyone's wishes. Everyone in Europe is familiar with electrical appliance efficiency labeling. However, there is a knowledge gap about EVs charging efficiency, albeit the most energy-intensive load in the household. Therefore, everyone who is interested in reducing energy losses in e-mobility should definitely read the paper. Some highlights to make you read the paper: -) The paper proposes a methodology to validate charging efficiency by relying on OBDII data. This proves once again how important it is to keep the OBDII port data available in the industry. Another very important reason for the EU Commission to not accept the pressure from OEMs on closing the data for customers. (Laurianne Krid) -) The global EV fleet efficiency is highly variable between models. Three-phase EVs have higher efficiency (87-90%) than single-phase (78-88%) EVs. However, curtailed three-phase EVs have an efficiency similar (78-87%) to single-phase EVs. -) Overall, by 2030 the EV fleet could achieve efficiency values of 88-95% and the OBC technology could saturate by 2035 with 90-96% efficiency. -) As shown in the data, reactive power consumption is not a strong point for many automakers. In fact, some models when charging with a current below 10 Amps violate low-voltage network code by experiencing a power factor (PF) smaller than 0.9. Independent academic research from Cornell University (Polina Alexeenko, Vasileios Charisopoulos) demonstrates that giving acces to a shared battery resource can substantially reduce deployed battery capacity, while ensuring to meet mobility needs. The authors indicate that trailer-mounted batteries are of particular relevance to this analysis. While using fully independent methodologies and data for evaluating the benefits of smart powerbank trailers to optimise the use of batteries, the results of this paper and EP Tender's own modelling are completely aligned. The user benefits go beyond the mere optimisation of battery usage (and cost): the driver no longer needs to spend time for charging as the add-on battery is attached, swapped or detached in 2 minutes, providing instant additional range to mass market affordable EVs! In partnership with Western Gateway STB, we have published our Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Study to provide an evidence base to support future EV charging policy across the region. The study is available here – https://lnkd.in/duptFUbd EV use is set to accelerate and the number of public charge points must be able to cope with demand, ensuring that EV users can travel around the peninsula with the confidence of being able to top up when needed. The data from the study will help local authorities to understand where, how many and what type of chargers will be required. The study takes into account the split between rural and urban demand, seasonal changes in demand, as well as likely areas of private sector investment. Already, these findings have played a vital role - for example, in shaping Cornwall’s EV infrastructure strategy. This will, in turn, help to support an application for LEVI funding. As of January 2023, there was a total of 2,408 existing chargers already operating in the region. However, by 2025 up to 13,400 chargepoints would be required, increasing to up to 54,800-74,400 by 2035. These charge points would be provided by both the public and private sector, with the public sector expected to deliver 10,600-20,000 charge points across the South West by 2030. Next steps include the development of a spatial planning tool for uptake, an online dashboard which will allow councils to cross-examine the data in detail and to set up a South West EV forum.
