I believe in Unity and on this auspicious National Commonwealth Day, let us embrace the power of unity and collaboration among nations. It's a day that calls for breaking down barriers, fostering understanding, and leveraging our collective strengths for the betterment of all. As we celebrate the peace we've achieved, let's envision a world where every nation is free to flourish independently, yet interconnected for the greater good. The Commonwealth Day celebration serves as a reminder of our shared values and goals. Established on the principle of mutual cooperation, it encourages member nations to collaborate on various fronts, from economic development to cultural exchange. Today, let's amplify this message of solidarity and encourage the pursuit of common interests that benefit each nation, ensuring a harmonious and prosperous global community.

Don’t know what to vote and leaning towards no? I encourage you first to learn more. We need to walk together with First Nations people for a brighter tomorrow. The Voice is both a practical and symbolic reform. Practically, the Voice is informed by decades of research and the experience of people on the ground, that decisions, policies, laws and most importantly outcomes are improved when Indigenous peoples are empowered and involved in the process. Symbolically, the Voice offers Australia a chance to design a more inclusive narrative of nationhood, informed and strengthened by the participation of First Nations people. This is to remind you Nature based Solutions must be implemented with full respect and recognition of indigenous and local people's rights, culture and preferences. Just because a Nature-based Solution intervention worked in another region does not give you the leeway to impose it in another place. NbS are context specific

Indigenous Peoples Indigenous Peoples are the rightful heirs and practitioners of diverse cultures and unique relationships with both humanity and the environment. They have preserved distinctive social, cultural, economic, and political traits that set them apart from the dominant societies within which they reside. Despite the richness of their cultural heritage, Indigenous Peoples globally face shared challenges in safeguarding their rights as distinct communities. For generations, Indigenous Peoples have tirelessly campaigned for the acknowledgment of their identities, customs, and entitlement to ancestral lands, territories, and natural resources. Regrettably, history attests to the perpetual violation of their rights. In contemporary times, Indigenous Peoples remain among the most marginalized and vulnerable populations worldwide. Recognizing this plight, the international community acknowledges the necessity for tailored interventions to uphold their rights and safeguard their unique cultures and ways of life. Theme for 2024, ‘Now More Than Ever’, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue. Now more than ever, the work continues. In treaty making, in truth-telling, in understanding our history, in education, and in tackling racism. We need connection. We need respect. We need action. And we need change. Now more than ever, we need reconciliation.
