It's #NAIDOCWeek, a nationwide celebration honouring the history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples. It’s a chance for us all to celebrate our Australian heritage, a chance to listen, learn and engage with amazing cultures and histories that span 65,000 years, in an effort to foster a society where contributions from First Nations people are valued and respected. This year's theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, celebrates First Nations people's cultural heritage, deep connection to Country and unyielding spirit. The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of the oldest living culture on earth – with fire as a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Department of Home Affairs and the Australian Border Force are proud to be actively creating a culturally safe and inclusive workplace that celebrates the contributions of First Nations peoples and supports their cultural responsibilities in their communities. 9 August - International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples (United Nations) International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is marked each year to raise awareness and to protect and promote the rights of the world's Indigenous populations. It is also an opportunity to celebrate these communities and their achievements and knowledge. This International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2024 is focusing on ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’. Indigenous Peoples across the globe have sought recognition of their identities, their way of life and their right to traditional lands, territories and natural resources for years. Yet, throughout history, their rights have been violated. Indigenous Peoples today, are arguably among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. The international community now recognizes that special measures are required to protect their rights and maintain their distinct cultures and way of life. For more information about International Day of the Worlds Indigenous Peoples visit the links above.

From Jaffna to Australia: Embracing NAIDOC Week and the Power of Resilience As a Tamil refugee born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, the journey to safety and stability has been one of profound challenges and invaluable lessons. Experiencing the horrors of civil war firsthand instilled in me a deep appreciation for peace, cultural heritage, and the importance of community. This personal history has given me a unique perspective on the significance of NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It’s a time to honour their rich traditions and acknowledge the resilience and strength that has carried them through adversity. Much like the Tamil community, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have faced significant challenges. Their perseverance and unwavering spirit remind us of the importance of unity, respect, and the power of cultural identity. NAIDOC Week is more than just a celebration; it’s a call to action for all Australians to engage with and support Indigenous communities. By learning from their stories and standing together, we can foster a more inclusive and respectful society. Let’s embrace this week with open hearts and minds, recognising the profound contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our shared history and future. #NAIDOC2024 #UnityInDiversity #CulturalHeritage #CommunityStrength

I know we are heading towards the end of NAIDOC week but I felt it was important to acknowledge this and the history around this important celebration. The 2024 NAIDOC Week theme – Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud celebrates the strength, resilience, and spirit of Aboriginal people and culture. Despite having experienced colonisation, dispossession of country, the formation of missions and the Aboriginal Protection Board (which led to the commencement of the forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families and loss of connection to country and kin) First Nations people remain a source of strength and inspiration. Moving from assimilation towards integration, in 1967 the commonwealth referendum saw First Nations people finally being granted citizenship. This led to First Nations people advocating for self-determination, gaining traction in the 1970’s through to the 1990’s and eventually leading to awareness of the need for reconciliation on a national level. Reconciliation is about unity and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and non-Indigenous Australians. It is about respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and valuing justice and equity for all Australians. All other Australians need to reflect on our actions and beliefs and commitment to reconciliation… this starts with an understanding of our shared history.
