Overnight, Ukraine’s biggest children’s hospital was hit by a missile attack. Search and rescue is underway at Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital. Photos from the scene show children attached to intravenous drips waiting to be evacuated. Dozens of rockets were fired across Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih. At least 33 people were killed and many more have been injured. UNHCR is providing emergency shelter kits to families living near the hospital, where homes have been severely damaged. More help is being mobilised, including cash assistance, mental health support and legal aid. Photos: OCHA and UN

🚨A mental health crisis is unfolding at the UK mass asylum camp in Wethersfield, Essex. Refugees should NOT have to survive another crisis. We are asking UK Home Office to #CloseTheCamps Over 74% of our Wethersfield patients present with severe psychological distress, with 41% experiencing suicidal ideation, as well as deliberate self-harm and suicide attempts. 68% had previous experience of violence or abuse. Nobody should be put at risk in government accommodation. 🚑 Since November, our mobile clinic at the Wethersfield asylum camp with Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) UK and Ireland has been treating people who have survived torture, violence, persecution and extreme poverty. Doctors of the World is an independent humanitarian charity. 💙 We exist to relieve medical need amongst people in crisis around the world. Our volunteer doctors and nurses provide emergency and long-term medical care and defend fair and universal access to health.

In findings published today, Dalia*, a mother in Gaza, said: “Our children have already lived through different wars. They already lacked resilience and now it’s very difficult to cope. The children are scared, angry and can’t stop crying. Even many adults do the same. This is too much for adults to cope with, let alone children.” The insights form an addendum to Save the Children research from 2022 charting the profound impacts of the Israeli Government’s then 15-years of blockade on the mental health of childreni. In the report, mental health and child protection experts working with Save the Children in Gaza said that without urgent action, starting with an immediate, definitive ceasefire and safe, unfettered humanitarian access, the war will inflict further lifelong detrimental mental harm, with rapidly shrinking opportunities to recover.

The catastrophic impact of the #Gaza conflict on children is a grave concern that demands immediate global attention. The staggering numbers — over 4,500 children killed, 1,500 missing, and the hostage situation — highlight the urgent need for a ceasefire and comprehensive protection strategies for children. The closure of schools and the lack of safe learning environments, affecting over 625,000 children, further exacerbate the crisis. On #WorldChildrensDay, it's imperative to emphasize that every child's right to safety, education, and psychological well-being is non-negotiable. We urge all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the protection of children and call upon the international community to actively support these efforts. The children of Gaza, and those affected by the conflict, deserve a chance to experience a childhood free from the shadows of war and fear. #ProtectChildrenInConflict #notatarget #ceasefirenow
Children must be protected—no matter where they are in the world. The conflict in Gaza has been catastrophic for children. Over 4,500 have been killed and an estimated 1,500 children are missing, either trapped or dead under the rubble. Thirty Israeli children remain held hostage inside Gaza. In addition to physical harm, more than 625,000 children do not have access to safe learning. Over half of Gaza's schools have been damaged in attacks and all are closed due to the conflict. Hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza have witnessed extensive destruction and displacement, and urgently need mental health and psychosocial support. Palestinian children deserve a ceasefire. This #WorldChildrensDay, we call on all parties to the conflict to take immediate steps to protect the lives of children, and on the international community to support those efforts.

A reminder - Israeli captives in Gaza are also targeted and attacked by their own IDF. There is no sense in humanitarian actors' attempts to maintain "neutrality" in their narratives regarding Gaza. Israelis have now killed over FIVE THOUSAND children in Gaza, and we can't find one official statement or one humanitarian actor who dared to explicitly say this! Staggering! And encouraging the perpetrators to continue their genocide! #stopthegenocide #savegaza #savepalestine #israeliterrorism #israeliwarcrimes #israelcrimes

On the #localization of Aid and #localleadership. While I follow the #ingos in Lebanon such as Oxfam in Lebanon International Rescue Committee Save the Children International Mercy Corps Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) CARE, among others, posting day and night calling for a ceasefire and highlighting the humanitarian sufferings in Gaza. Many and many of the local #ngos pages in Lebanon are empty of any concerns on the dire #humanitariancrisis taking place few miles away! Many are having their business as usual and posting about their new daily achievements in #lebanon. What does my #research on the localization of aid in Lebanon tell me about this? This is totally understandable given the current power dynamics between local and international actors. While local actors fear any possible repercussions by international donors (mainly #oecd countries) due to their engagement in such heated topics (even if no evidence may suggest that such repercussions are on the table), International actors, given their huge human and financial resources abroad, enjoy a much larger margin of maneuver where they can speak up for their values candidly and loud without fearing the restrictions of conditional funding. This is not about a discrepancy in #values , but rather a discrepancy in organizational #power and in organizational #precariousness.

Effective child protection requires more than just addressing immediate physical safety concerns. It necessitates a comprehensive approach that includes MHPSS to help children cope with trauma, build resilience, and thrive despite their circumstances. By integrating MHPSS into child protection strategies, we can ensure that children survive and develop to their full potential in a supportive environment. The shortage of mental health professionals remains a concern given the rise of issues such as adolescent suicide in the country. The Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa (CoRMSA), Jesuit Refugee Service, Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative (REPSSI) and Three2Six call on all stakeholders – Governments, NGOs, communities, and individuals – to unite in strengthening both child protection and MHPSS frameworks. Together, we can create a safer, healthier, and more supportive world for our children. #mentalhealth #childprotection #supportiveenvironment #mentalhealthmatters #childdevelopment

The recent false claim by the Israeli government of a forty beheaded baby was used to justify their actions under the guise of self-defense. However, there has been no evidence to substantiate this claim, yet it was enough to be echoed by their allies worldwide. Now, we are witnessing the horrifying reality of thousands of innocent children being killed, starved, and left orphaned in Gaza. It's a stark reminder of the hypocrisy in our world – where we rush to save animals, yet fail to protect fellow human beings. The dehumanization of Palestinians as "human animals" by Israel is not only abhorrent but also indicative of a larger systemic issue. We must not turn a blind eye to the suffering and injustice faced by the people of Gaza. It's time for accountability. Israel must be held responsible for its actions and its disregard for human life. Every innocent life lost is a tragedy that cannot be ignored. The stark reality is gut-wrenching: more children have perished in Gaza in the past four months than in all wars globally in the past four years combined. It's not just a call to action; it's a plea for humanity. The Australian Government must act swiftly and decisively to end this humanitarian crisis. We cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of innocent lives. Let us stand together in solidarity against injustice and unite in compassion and demand that our government end all military cooperation with Israel and fully support the International Court of Justice's directives to provide essential aid to the children and adults of Gaza. Every child, regardless of their nationality or circumstance, deserves safety, security, and hope. Join me in raising our voices to ensure that the children of Gaza are protected and provided for. Together, we can make a difference and end the war on innocent lives. #GazaCrisis #ChildrensRights I #InternationalHealth #AustralianPediatricians #EndWarOnChildren
