The United States is struggling to outpace its global adversaries in the information domain, and a whole-of-society response is needed, the special envoy and coordinator of the State Department’s Global Engagement Center said July 2 at a Hot Topic event hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army. “In the information domain, our adversaries are devoting more attention [to gaining the information advantage], and we are not winning,” James Rubin said during a keynote address. “The information threat is not something that can be solved by even a whole-of-government response, it needs a whole-of-society response.” #ReadMore: https://loom.ly/OlBm81A #AUSAorg #USArmy #informationwarfare #globalengagement #theinformationadvantage #domain #government

The term “Irregular Warfare” can be confusing and even a bit scary, but one of the primary intents of irregular warfare is to deter conventional warfare, which should make it feel more comforting than scary. Where we see violent conflict in the world (Ukraine, Israel, Syria) are locations where a more focused application of irregular warfare may have prevented the conflict, saving precious lives and mounting costs. Recently, M6 leadership had the opportunity to talk with Senator Joni Ernst (highlighted in this article) and her staff about the importance of irregular warfare in the context of our current peer nation and strategic competition threat-scape. In addition to needed resources, this legislative support also drives policy development (as seen in comments from Mr Maier and General Milley), interagency and international collaboration (including among industry, academia, and defense), and public awareness of how the application of irregular warfare can save our country’s blood and treasure. Efforts to increase understanding, awareness, and application are ongoing at the Irregular Warfare Center (https://lnkd.in/gay8ucTd). The Center amplifies innovative and adaptable global-networked communities of interest, illuminates current and future threats, and works collaboratively within the US and with allies and partners to address those threats by providing training and options. M6’s National Security Solutions (M6-NSS) is proud to support the US Department of Defense in the work done by the Irregular Warfare Center around the world. #irregularwarfare #nationalsecurity

The Army’s “Information Advantage” is ill-considered and not a serious approach to the problems within the information environment. By not aligning with the other Services and the Joint Force, this doctrinal approach causes ambiguity and degrades interoperability—also, it is just poor English. Army conducts “Information Advantage”; this is the best the Combined Arms Center could come up with. We really need to develop Professional Information Warriors. We need to be expanding capabilities to meet current (and future) challenges in the information space. We need to prepare the Army to provide the Joint Force Commander Interoperable options. It's hard to see how “Information Advantage accomplishes any of this.

📢COMING SOON! The Seminar on Irregular Warfare and Hybrid Threats (SIWHT) 🌐 SIWHT is a three-week course designed for participants from around the globe to identify the actions adversarial states employ below the threshold of direct military conflict to undermine the national security of other states and organizations. #GCMC's next iteration of SIWHT begins June 4. 👉The seminar will help participants better understand strategic competition and hostile actions adversarial states employ in the “Grey Zone." 👉SIWHT focuses particularly on countering hybrid threats through a whole-of society, whole-of- government approach, and the role of allies and partners in deterrence. 👉This iteration of SWIHT will focus on a range of irregular warfare and hybrid threat tools, including but not limited to coercive economics, information, the use of proxy forces, cyberwarfare, and “lawfare” as a tool to further a state’s hostile intentions. Stay tuned for regular updates on SIWHT starting next week. For more information on the course, visit: https://lnkd.in/erBfKgdG #SIWHT2024 #StrategicLeadership

China's intelligence overhaul signals a laser focus on information warfare. Xi Jinping restructured key agencies, including creating a dedicated Information Support Force, focusing on information warfare. This move reflects Xi's drive for military modernization and bolsters China's capabilities in these critical domains. Experts suggest a heightened emphasis on informationized warfare at a time when other nations are de-emphasizing the domain and focusing on those in which they would prefer to compete. #CCP #china #informationwarfare #cognitivesecurity #geopoliticalrisk #strategiccompetition #grayzone #cyber https://lnkd.in/gHQ8m8f6

The Army has released a much-anticipated doctrine document about the “gray zone”. The gray zone refers to operations that are not traditional armed conflict. The new document “describes a combined arms approach to creating and exploiting information objectives” to better support Army information advantage. What key takeaways do you have from this new doctrine? What’s next for Army information warfare capabilities? https://lnkd.in/g_5Fyiam

Strategist. Information Warfare Expert. Seasoned Director of Operations ISR, Graduated Commander, TS/SCI
Today I’m attending the Information Warfare Symposium hosted by Defense Strategies Institute. Information Warfare is the ability to employ military capabilities in and through the information environment which deliberately affect adversary human and system behavior to preserve friendly freedom of action during cooperation, competition, and conflict and falls under the Irregular Warfare umbrella and is why NoTrust Government is so important! Irregular warfare is a coercive struggle that erodes or builds legitimacy for the purpose of political power. It blends disparate lines of effort to create an integrated attack on societies and their political institutions. It weaponizes frames and narratives to affect credibility and resolve, and it exploits societal vulnerabilities to fuel political change. As such, states engaged in, or confronted with, irregular warfare must bring all elements of power to bear under a nation’s national political leadership. My assumption is the USAF will continue with the belief that conventional wisdom is the answer key to solving all conflicts. The USAF believes at its core that effective airpower requires the ability to deploy, generate, employ, and sustain air operations without realizing that gaining, protecting, defending, and leveraging information advantages in the operational environment is required to create air superiority. The paradigm shift leaves much to be learned for leadership to understand that the USAF must first gain information advantage against our strategic competitors and threats to enable the Air Force’s ability to conduct its five core missions. My other assumption is that the USAF, the DoD, and the U.S. government as a whole will conduct information warfare in a defensive manner. Legal constraints and the current strategic documents produced by the Biden Administration leave little room to move from defensive to offensive operations in the information warfare domain. Rebalancing the responsibility to defend and creating a digital ecosystem that is defensible and resilient are all key buzzword terms used in the Biden Strategies. We stand united in remembering the bravery and sacrifice of those who served our nation on December 7th, 1941. On that fateful day, the attack on Pearl Harbor forever changed the course of history. The lives lost serve as a stark reminder of the importance of defending our freedom and the unwavering commitment of our armed forces. While the technology of 1941 pales in comparison to today's advancements, it played a crucial role in the events of December 7th. Radar technology, still in its infancy, provided crucial early warning of the approaching attack, allowing for some level of preparation. Additionally, codebreakers at the Navy's cryptanalysis unit were able to decipher Japanese communications, providing valuable insights into their plans and movements. Technology has continued to evolve rapidly since then, becoming an increasingly vital tool for national security. From advanced surveillance systems and sophisticated weaponry to secure communication networks and intelligence-gathering capabilities, technology plays a critical role in protecting our nation from threats both foreign and domestic. Here at ISPA, we are committed to harnessing the power of technology for good. We believe that by developing innovative solutions and collaborating with our partners, we can help create a safer and more secure future for all. Today, we honor those who gave everything to ensure our freedom. We also pledge to continue working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the United States. #PearlHarborDay #NeverForget #ThankYouForYourService #TechnologyForGood #FreedomIsNotFree
