Leader, Strategist, Raconteur | Growing the Next Generation One Leader at a Time | Professor of the Practice at the University of Kansas School of Business
The next book on the #reading list for January: The Commanders by Lloyd Clark. Rommel, Montgomery, and Patton were larger-than-life personalities and incredibly successful military #leaders. However, each of them suffered significant failures of their own doing. Was it ego? Was it hubris? Was it a lack of self-awareness or an inability to self-reflect? It's always fascinating to dig into the #why behind the decisions people make, to understand #how their decision-making processes lead them to make the choices they do, to explore #when cognitive biases influence our ability to see clearly when it matters most.

Here is today's book highlight: The idea of duty is a simple one. We all have a job to do in life. Whether that job is serving customers in a restaurant, taking care of our family, teaching our children, policing our cities, caring for the ill and infirm, protecting our gate, following the military Code of Conduct, or leading the country, we must do our job to the best of our ability. We must do our job well, not because it serves our interests, but because it serves the interests of others. We do not live in this world alone. Duty is a recognition that you have a responsibility to your fellow man and woman. It is an unselfish act, whether great or small, that contributes to the welfare of humanity. That is what makes it so very powerful. If you want to be a hero, it’s easy. Just do your duty! The Hero Code: Lessons Learned from Lives Well Lived by Admiral William H. McRaven

Program Manager, former Surface Warfare Officer (nuclear), Volunteer tour guide USS Alabama Battleship Park, Board member Mobile, Alabama Chapter of the Navy League
I watched the 2024 documentary “Blue Angels” and I loved it! It follows the team during its 2022 season from practices to the final performance. I loved it not just because I grew up watching the Blue Angels and it is one of the reasons I joined the Navy. This is a movie that describes what any organization - sports, medicine, manufacturing, service - must do if it wants to go beyond great and become the absolute very best at what they do. In a world of growing mediocrity, we desperately need more perfection. Five out of five stars. https://lnkd.in/esx77WSS

President, American University Kyiv/ Co-President Thayer Leadership at West Point/Special Advisor to Ukraine Armed Forces Commander In Chief 5/2022-3/2023 (unpaid).
Ukraine should receive our longest range ATACMs missiles next week. This will include a number of other artillery shells that are long overdue such as 155mm cluster munitions in large numbers, M26 cluster rockets, Excalibur precision guided 155mm shells, GMLRS, M-39 Cluster Atacms missiles with 165km range and ATACMs solid projectile with 300 km range, as well as the Ground Launched Small Diameter bomb which is a new weapon that is incredibly accurate with 165 km range. This increased firepower will make an immediate difference on the battlefield. And will put much of the occupied territories under very accurate artillery fire supported by drone reconnaissance. Ukraine will also receive large replacement of Stingers, Patriots and other anti- aircraft and anti-missile systems. These will help protect both the armed forces, the civilians, and the critical infrastructure being targeted by Russia with weapons supplied by Iran, North Korea and supported by China. Additional Tow and Javelin missiles will make any offensive operations by Russian armored forces nearly impossible. Ukraine has proven to be very innovative with all weapons provided. The targeting for these munitions is likely being planned now to maximize impact upon arrival. The U.S. Army logical system is one of the most effective and advanced supply chain, in challenging environments. Senator Mark Warner confirms long range ATACMs will arrive next week.
