What is a smile control? Do *you* use them? Smile controls are any movements that diminish the appearance of a smile. There are many ways they can manifest in the face. Some actions move against the upward pull of the lips of zygomaticus major (which is the muscle that pulls the lip corners obliquely into what we typically consider a “smile” shape). Others may flatten the smile or compress it. In this brief video, I discuss some common smile controls in both FACS and anatomical terms, as well as explore the psychological reasons why people might show them. ***Bonus here for FACS folks: notice in this video how many 12 15s I use spontaneously while when I am teaching/explaining to a camera!
