Go back in time. Can you imagine what the farmer getting up before the sun and working long into the dark would say if you told him he just needed to get a side job? Or if you told high school graduates that one day they would need a master’s degree to secure entry level employment? Or if you climbed to the top of the buildings of New York to tell the steel worker that one day their job would be seen as backward and that society would seek to replace them with machines? Or if you told the homemaker that raising children and running a household was not a job but just a construct of the patriarchy? While there is some enthusiasm from stronger #productivity growth, I was struck by this article. We have lots of young, new hires entering the jobs market at a time when many older, experiences workers are leaving. Labor quality, which reflects the growth in worker skills from education and experience is an important driver of productivity. To wit, "Since 2020, when the pandemic began and remote learning moved students out of schools and into virtual classrooms, the pass rates on national certifications and assessment exams taken by engineers, office workers, soldiers and nurses have all fallen." #economy #macro #labor #financeandeconomy
