A major bottleneck in the energy transition is the expansion of the electrical grid. Global grid capacity needs to grow 2.5 times its current size, with annual expenditure on grids more than doubling to USD 970 billion by 2050. While Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) offer potentially significant temporary relief, the long-term solution lies in accelerating the construction of new grid infrastructure and advanced controlling systems, which are currently hampered by permitting timelines, the scarcity of human and material resources, and financial constraints.

Non-Pipeline Alternatives: A Regulatory Framework and a Case Study of Colorado is the second report prepared by Strategen that offers a framework for evaluating non-pipeline alternatives (NPAs) that states can adapt to meet their #policy needs. NPAs provide an opportunity to reduce emissions, gas system costs, and customer risk by avoiding infrastructure spending. An NPA is an investment or activity that defers, reduces, or avoids the need to construct or replace gas system infrastructure. Rather than address system issues with traditional capital projects, utilities can leverage demand-side NPA resources, such as energy efficiency and #electrification, and supply-side NPA resources, such as locationally deployed liquified natural gas, to reduce customer costs and reduce the risk of stranded assets. #CleanEnergy #sustainability #decarbonization

Utilities around the world are upgrading and optimizing their grid infrastructure. However, between incorporating #renewableenergy sources, increasing demand for #electricity, extreme weather, and numerous vendor solutions, there are many issues to address. The path forward isn’t always clear. Roadmaps are instrumental in ensuring strategic plans and decisions are consistent with the utility’s ultimate future goals. In this article - the first in a two-part series - PSC North America's Anil Jampala and Ken Pratt cover why roadmaps are so important for utilities looking to modernize their grids while maintaining #gridreliability.
