Psychotropic medications have ZERO impact on dealing with the root cause of trauma. Let’s go back to the beginning. The number one cause of homelessness is trauma.

Today is Mental Health Awareness day. Almost half of the people seeking help from homelessness services in our region had recently experienced difficulties with their mental health. For 30% of them, the state of their mental health is why they were homeless. Mental ill-health both contributes to and is exacerbated by the stress and trauma of homelessness. It’s critical to quickly house those without a home and living with a mental illness to ensure their well-being, security, and recovery. Suicide ideation, mental health problems, (intergenerational) trauma and addiction are not really talked about in the Muslim communities. The stigma is therefore deep and isolating. It can also lead to wrong perceptions about Muslims which can lead to harm. We have to do better. Solutions are found in the communities and NHS services need to have an ACBD (Asset Based Community Development) approach and build on community assets, management representation and trust. Cultural competent training for staff and residents and co-production are key to better access. #MentalHealthAwareness #TransculturalLeadership #OurNHSPeople
