Entangled World explores the interrelated, existential social, economic, ecological, and technological risks we face, their underlying drivers, and how a more beautiful world might emerge. My guest today is Darcia Narvaez, Professor Emerita of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame. Darcia explores how compassionate morality in humans unfolds and what we can do to nurture it. In our conversation, we talk about how early life experiences are SO critical because they shape and mold our personality, our desires and values, and our capacities. Darcia says when you undermine early experience, you’re setting up the brain to be a dominator brain because you don't develop all the social skills that naturally emerge from an immersed and nested experience early in life. Darcia and I talk about how we’re living in ways that are very disconnected from the Earth and that the disconnection starts at birth. We actually evolved for cooperative child raising with kin AND non kin (meaning animals, plants and other living matter) all actively participating in raising our children, not just one or two parents as is the case in many industrialized nations. And if you think about it, there’s no society unless you’re taking care of mothers and children. Imagine if we created a society around caring for mothers and children? What might that world look like? How might we act today to support the emergence of that world? Each one of us has a gift to give the world and in this episode, Darcia and I invite you to consider what your unique gift might be and how you might share it with the world. I think this episode will resonate particularly if you’re a parent who feels like you’re struggling day to day, just trying to survive. Human history tells us we’ve actually evolved to live a very different way than the way many of us who are caught in the web of modernity are living.

Are your New Year resolutions fading away? Are you feeling down on yourself for dropping the ball after setting the plan to make change, become more committed to your goals, and do what you need to do to feel better, happier and more healthy? We are now almost mid January and the resolve you had on New Year's day to change things up in your life may be seeming very far away. And you’re not alone. A poll shared by Forbes shows that only 8% of the thousand people who took the poll reported sticking with their resolutions for a full month. Some people even refer to this second Friday in January as “Quitters Day”. Resolutions are not the be and end all of starting the new year. Being pressured into making change for the sake of change is not lasting. What is more sustainable is taking a step back and using your own personal values around what brings meaning to you in the long run is a more authentic reason for setting goals. So if this is you, perhaps it’s time to step back from giving yourself the gears for not following through with your plans, and offer a bit of kindness to yourself. Asking yourself questions like: ️❄️ What matters most to me right now? ❄️ What difference do I want to make for my community or for those around me? ❄️ What is one thing I’m doing to help myself move one step forward each day toward getting more of what matters the most to me? ❄️ What support or help do I need to move toward what matters most? Authentic change to bring more happiness and health into your life is more sustainable when you care deeply about the long term end results. Change is sustainable when you have resources and others with you on the journey. Reset your day with resilience

In a few days… The Earthlink Fast, 4th year in ceremony From 1st to 4th October, trained vision fast guides will fast these four days in the wilderness or natural places known to them, from South Africa, Europe and North America to listen deeply into what in this time the Earth* is expressing. It is a conversation with life, Earth, our partner. They are not in action to save anyone or anything, be only with their own story or for any specific outcome, but simply to listen, look and learn from the intention just to be in partnership with the Earth. People are asking me about any outcome from the guides fasting over four days. When we started to put this together, our small team contacted elders and referenced other ceremonies with indigenous roots and clearly comprehended, that the doing is what informs a person, activates a change in the consciousness and thereon to add to the collective. We don’t come back with a single message, yet when hearing the essences of the stories in the grand council, one may have heard a clear and unified thread in the stories of gratitude and grief. In a more usual vision fast, a person initiates a ceremony that lasts a year, the story unfolding becomes a medicine for them and is not shared in this time or after without due care and at an appropriate moment. The roots of such ceremony lie in the collective heart of a ‘village’ and way of being in life. This particular fast was co-created in going beyond one’s own story and listening at a different level to the earth as a partner, by a few people across the world in a kind of global web or net. In many ways, this has been going on in different forms of ceremony and rituals, but perhaps not so commonly by western people. By joining the the Earthlink Fast as a non-trained VF Guide, we are suggesting a 12–24 hour abstinence from food to mark this time, spending some or all of the time in a natural environment, alone without distractions, listening. Why listen? In readiness to enter “Don´t know land” to listen, look and learn from what may be heard or emerging in a collective sense from our global partner, or group soul of the world, one may challenge the behaviour to re-play old stories that are stored in our narratives; the left half of our brain and receive truly new insights, motivations and experiences. We don’t know what will come. And its a question; to find out what happens when we interact from a partnership, or as an intimate lover with the Earth and or nature. Surviving our Catastrophes: Celebrating the Resilience & Renewal of Survivors w/Robert J Lifton, MD Freedom of Mind Resource Center Sep 6, 2023 I speak with the acclaimed psychiatrist and my mentor, Robert Jay Lifton, M.D., about his new book, Surviving Our Catastrophes: Resilience and Renewal from Hiroshima to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Lifton’s research on thought reform and the psychology of totalism, specifically his study on “brainwashing” in China, has been widely regarded as groundbreaking. His book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism (1961) was used in my deprogramming. It was Lifton who encouraged my career which has spanned 47 years. In this new book, Lifton delves into “Survivor Power” and the transformation from victimhood to survivorship. He emphasizes the importance of drawing on the knowledge and wisdom gained from surviving traumatic experiences to continue living meaningful lives. The book takes inspiration from historical examples of survivors who have endured unimaginable suffering and trauma. Lifton highlights the remarkable responses of individuals who, in the face of unspeakable horror, have created activist movements, converted their experiences into art and literature, and demonstrated the resilience of the human spirit. From the people of Hiroshima, who responded to the atomic bombing by creating an activist “city of peace,” to the survivors of Nazi death camps who combated mass killing and showcased their healing through art and literature, these examples serve as beacons of hope.
