The world is embracing diversity in many ways. We celebrate the multitude of gender identities, we are against racial discrimination, we are proud of our multicultural background, yet curiously, the most obvious way to build connections is resisted by many people. People simply don't want to learn each other's languages, and so there is this gap, divide, disconnect between the English-speaking and the French-speaking communities in Suisse Romande. While the French speakers acknowledge the need to learn English, they are hesitant about it in reality, and the English speakers are not a hair better. Both are stuck in the idea that somehow learning the other's language is too difficult, that it's too late for them, that in reality, they can do without it. And how wrong they are. Human connections are impossible with people from other backgrounds without switching languages. We must embrace the idea that our fumbled sentences pave the way to another person's heart from a different language. Leaving our comfort zone and potentially making mistakes in another language is not only a source of insecurity, but is also a sign of courage and the only way forward. Human diversity simply goes hand in hand with linguistic diversity. By speaking another language, however incorrectly, we serve as examples for other people to follow. #suisse #switzerland #french #language #integration #thriving #expats

On the Guarani Language and the Importance of Language Rights Language is not merely a tool for communication; it holds a significant place in our identity, culture, and heritage. Every year, on February 21st, we celebrate International Mother Language Day, followed by the Global Language Advocacy Day tomorrow, to highlight the importance of linguistic diversity and promote language rights. As a linguist specializing in the Guarani language, I am deeply passionate about shedding light on the significance of language rights and the preservation of mother tongues. 👉 Did you know that the Guarani language is spoken by approximately 10 million people in Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Bolivia? 🇵🇾 🇧🇷 🇦🇷 🇧🇴 👉And that it is so widespread in Paraguay that it is the only indigenous language spoken by the majority of the non-indigenous population? Throughout history, indigenous languages like Guarani have faced marginalization and suppression due to colonization and the imposition of dominant languages. However, the Guarani people have fiercely protected their language, utilizing it as a tool to preserve their cultural heritage and assert their rights. The concept of language rights is intricately interwoven with the idea of linguistic diversity and cultural preservation. Language rights encompass the right of individuals and communities to use, learn, and preserve their native language. They also encompass the right to access information and services in a language that individuals can understand. In the context of Guarani, recognizing and promoting language rights implies acknowledging the importance of Guarani as a living language and providing resources for its preservation and revitalization. This involves supporting initiatives that promote bilingual education, translating crucial documents into Guarani, and creating spaces for the usage and celebration of the language. By embracing #Guarani as the "Language of Resistance" and advocating for language rights, we acknowledge the historical and cultural significance of indigenous languages. We affirm the right of indigenous communities to maintain and develop their languages, ensuring that they are not only preserved but also valued and respected. That is why today, I am thrilled to share with you my Guarani translation of the GCLR Statement on Understanding and Defending Language Rights. I would like to express my gratitude to the Global Coalition for Language Rights (GCLR) for allowing me to be a part of this initiative. Thrilled at Dr Lingxia Zhou's just-published review of my book! Happy that she liked it, of course; her 'favourite chapter' is my Lived Linguistic Landscape (Ch 8). I'm even happier that she has carefully summarised the main points and the contribution my book makes both to research methods and to our understanding of how language rights actually work, not only in China. This will really help those who don't have time to read the whole book. [Looking at you, language policy-makers and language policy researchers! Everyone is time-poor ;) ] https://lnkd.in/gBc85r7E Zhou writes: "As a researcher in language policy and planning, I am fascinated by Grey’s innovative integration of lived linguistic landscape studies into language rights [...] She also extends the study of linguistic landscape to an examination of viewers’ subjectivity through ‘commented walks’ and interviews with interlocutors conducted while walking through the landscapes (p. 220). It would be interesting to see future research on other minority languages adopting similar approaches. With relevance beyond China, this study also connects mobility, capitalism and globalisation in the Chinese context through its discussion of minority language politics. It is a valuable contribution to our growing understanding of language policy and planning, linguistic justice, linguistic landscape and contemporary China studies. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the above-mentioned fields."
