Fashion wants next-gen materials, but doesn’t know how to get there.   At Première Vision Paris, we had the opportunity to discover the latest advances in sustainable fabrics and eco-responsible practices. However, the reduced presence of the Smart Creation space and fewer discussions on sustainability vs. last year were noticed by many attendees 🌿 The reality of the innovative materials market remains complex and challenging. Last week Sustainabelle Advisory Services published a new report backed by Kering and the Laudes Foundation that lays out the challenges and next steps for fashion’s #NextGen materials. For instance, brands seem to sign letters of intent instead of offtake agreements. During last week’s Future Fabrics Expo, material innovators confirmed these findings to Bella Webb in Vogue Business: 👻 Mira N. (Biophilica) talks about being ‘ghosted’ by brands who act interested but then disappear ⏳ Clare Lichfield (Sequinova) observes how brands play a “waiting game”, afraid to be the first 🎁 Stephanie Downs (UNCAGED Innovations) highlights the risks of traditional sourcing practices to ask for free custom prototypes to NextGen companies, who don’t have the resources to make this happen Disrupting the mainstream remains a challenging reality, and requires balancing design, financial and ecological considerations 🎨💸🌍 - a challenge we, at athena studio, help fashion product teams with in early product development. 🔗 Link: https://lnkd.in/eBNy3FvH #premierevision #sustainablefashion #smartcreation #fashion #fashiontech #materials #fabrics #sustainability #memesfriday

#Vogue World: Paris celebrated fashion and sport in what will arguably go down as the Olympics inofficial opening 🥇🏆 Fashion has always been fertile ground for innovation and creativity, and the Vogue World Paris event, held on June 23 at Place Vendôme, was no exception. This year's show celebrated 100 years of French #fashion and sport, a month before the #OlympicGames. With over 500 participants, including Serena and Venus Williams 🎾, the event indeed highlighted the growing importance of sport in #fashion. Food for thought: are the upcoming EU regulations, incl. the #PEF, all about measurement? 📝 Or… Do they provide an opportunity for early optimisation? 🚀 The biggest #sustainability challenge for designers and brands is that “sustainable design” is multidimensional and often contradictory across dimensions. The PEF aims to bring an approach to measuring the impact of both the production and circular design of a product into 1️⃣ single score. ✅ The benefit: it’s a set of guidelines to ensure consistent measurement of the environmental impact of a design 💡 The opportunity: by integrating the multiple sustainability dimensions in 1 single score, it makes “sustainable design” feasible Fashion #design is not about optimising for cost nor is it about optimising for a regulatory score: it’s about delivering a #creative vision that responds to a brand’s DNA. But to realise a sketch, product teams often have multiple choices when it comes to fabric, trim and supplier selection.
