In the Pacific context, this funding is allowing us to expand the WISH Fiji partnership to create a Pacific Partnership for Planetary Health. Working with our key partners, Wildlife Conservation Society, Fiji National University’s Fiji Institute of Pacific Health Research and Edith Cowan University’s (Centre for People, Place and Planet), The Watershed Interventions for Systems Health in Fiji (WISH Fiji) project is a collaborative, research-to-action approach that is working within watershed units to reduce risk of water-related disease and improve downstream ecosystem health. WISH Fiji is designed to reduce risks to people from Fiji’s three plagues (leptospirosis, typhoid, and dengue), as well as other diarrheal disease (collectively ‘LTDDs’), by improving overall systems health, which provides co-benefits for downstream ecosystems, such as coral reefs. Our WISH program approach is expanding into Papua New Guinea and the Solomons with the support of the Kiwa Initiative and this crucial funding from Australian Government’s Indo-Pacific Centre for Health Security.

Next Tuesday, I am thrilled to share a watershed moment in the world of wastewater-based surveillance. Join me for a webinar that promises to be a beacon of hope for developing nations, titled "Advancing Global Health: Empowering Developing Nations through Wastewater Surveillance". Reflecting on the incredible journey of our field over the past three years, I'm struck by the monumental progress we've achieved. From my first steps into research in 2015 to now, our strides have been nothing short of extraordinary. Yet, there is still a vast horizon of potential ahead of us. One wastewater-based surveillance's most critical endeavors is to extend the reach of these methods to developing nations. These regions house over 80% of our global family and play a pivotal role in shaping our collective future. Understanding disease outbreaks and combating antibiotic resistance in these areas holds monumental significance for global health, our sustainable future, and our planet. Our webinar will shine a spotlight on an ongoing project in collaboration with the University of Louisville and the Malawi University of Science and Technology. ❓ Of course #COVID-19 has reminded us how rapidly a simple case can become a situation but Do you know how much climate change and human health are linked? If we zoom in: Australia is directly threatened by #climate disasters (heatwaves, floods, droughts, bushfires), which will become increasingly frequent and violent. 📢 Check out our current publication at the IDIMT conference 2023 in September on page 13. 🔬🚚 https://lnkd.in/dcpXt6Xc Abstract: Climate change and other factors like population increase, inhabitance of new areas, deforestation and agricultural expansion and roll back of living environment of species make transmission of viruses in particular from animal to humans and outbreak of pandemics more likely. To respond adequately to such threats arising from pathogens like emerging arboviruses such as the CrimeanCongo haemorrhagic fever virus or the West Nile virus, mobile one health laboratories with the highest bio-safety level 4 (BSL4) are becoming increasingly important. For the coordination of several mobile laboratories a decision support system is needed. To identify the optimized locations for the operation of these resources, the results on the local incidence of specific pathogens provided by the mobile laboratories needs to be combined with data from different provenience such as modelling of the trend of incidence of pathogens, information provided by international stakeholders such as European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) as well as analysis of data coming from sources such as social media. Based on a set of indicators decision makers can be supported in taking time-critical decisions. Within the project MOBILISE a BSL4 14 mobile laboratory and decision support system (DSS) is developed, using a set of indicators for assistance in taking time-critical decisions. The DSS extends the relevant system built in the STAMINA project for pandemic management, adopting the One Health approach to balance and optimize the health of people, animals and the environment. #MOBILISE #ONEHEALTH #PANDEMIC #RESEARCH #INNOVATION #EU #GREENENERGY
