Meet our Hospice Volunteer, Tori! Tori comes from a military family who moved around quite a bit, but she considers her true homes to be Northern California and Northern Virginia, where her family lives. She is a pre-med student with plans to join the Navy after med school. She loves hiking and kayaking and keeps chickens who she often knits personalized sweaters for. Some of Tori’s favorites include: • Vacation destination: her cousins’ houses • Book: too hard to choose but nothing compares to the night she stayed up until 6:00am reading Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein • Game: it’s a tie between Talisman: The Magical Quest Game, the 2nd edition and Stardew Valley • Movie and TV show: RRR and Avatar: The Last Airbender (the cartoon) As an AT Home Care and Hospice volunteer, Tori is currently providing companionship to an elderly gentleman living in a care facility. During their visits, they play board games and she reads to him. Volunteering with AT Home Care and Hospice provides Tori an opportunity to volunteer even with her hectic schedule of work and school. She says, “It has been wonderful not only getting to know someone but becoming a regular part of their life. When I take an hour to just focus on being present with another person, I feel much more connected to the rest of the world.” Thank you for all you do, Tori! We are proud to have you on our volunteer team. #VounteerSpotlight #HospiceVolunteer

IF YOU CAN'T SERVE A GENERATION.... Lately, I have a been a part of a few teams and there's a trend I have noticed with individuals when they volunteer on a platform. Either you have the set of people: • That think they are doing the organization a favor by volunteering. • That are suddenly too busy for what they volunteered for, because according to them they have other important engagements ( in my head, I am always like " you should have weighed all these before volunteering"). • That believes they can do minimal work because they are not being paid. ♻ Volunteering which I will also call service is definitely one of the ways God prepares men for the next level or even build capacity in them. There are so many things that you will never learn and will later be useful to you except you volunteer and make yourself available to take on tasks. ♻ Often times you will see individuals praying for God to announce them to a generation and I'm just at loss because the prayer you should be praying is "open my eyes to see how can I serve those around me?". Like for real, you want announcement without serving a generation. If they are not paying you, you will be complaining everyday about how the demands of the volunteering is too much for you.....lol. ♻ Volunteer or not, you ain't doing anyone a favor by signing up to serve, you are only doing yourself a favor because beyond payment, you will build your portfolio, capacity, character, even experience. At the end of your service, the question that will linger still remains " what did you learn and who did you become at the end of it?". If you cannot serve a generation, don't expect announcement. God doesn't work that way. Happy New Week Linked in Fam. ♻ Repost to help someone today. There are so many of you who have reached out with interest in becoming a volunteer, or expressing a need to find some way to give back to the community. The most common reason we hear for not committing is time. Everyone is busy - all of us! What I'd like to help people understand is how easy it is to help an older neighbor with a simple service - when YOU are available. Volunteering with Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley is designed to work on your schedule, with opportunities to serve as little or as much as you'd like. Let's start with transportation to medical appointments. We have a full schedule of requests for rides to doctor's offices. As a volunteer, you are given full access to that schedule so you can see where the care receiver lives, where they need to go, and how long we anticipate this event to take in total. In other words, you'll be given all the information you need to make an informed decision regarding whether or not that particular trip will work for you. Let's say you know you are free next Thursday afternoon and you open the schedule to see Mary, who lives not far from you, needs a ride to a 2 pm appointment. You decide you can do that, so you sign up. On Thursday, you pick Mary up, drive her to her appointment, and then make sure she gets safely home when it is over. If Mary lives 30 miles from you and it's just too much - you don't sign up. That's it. That's how simple it is. When we say to our volunteers that accepting even one assignment a month is an enormous help to us and to those we serve, we mean it. Our opportunities are flexible, short-term, and meaningful, all at the same time - and that is by design. We want this experience to be as satisfying for you as a volunteer as it is for the older neighbors who benefit from your kindness. Join us at our next in-person training on August 20th - or visit our website to take the online training at your own pace - to learn more. We'd love to welcome you to the family! #volunteer #servingseniors #neighbortoneighbor #helpinghands

“Eat a 🍆…” This year, during one of our holiday season volunteer activities, I had an additional learning opportunity for my 12-year-old. A guy leaving the store responded to our “happy holidays” with a scowling “eat a 🍆.” We stopped; everyone around us stopped, but he kept rolling and we ignored him. 60 seconds later, he was walking up the parking lot again. Defense mode dad kicked in, and I sent Addy inside, unsure of what would happen. He stopped close to me and lectured for 5 minutes about how the Salvation Army is bad, we are wrong for raising money for it, the whole thing is a scam. On and on he went, calming down with every mean thing he said that I chose not to respond to. Eventually, he apologized for the profanity and walked away. My kids see me as a warrior who gets what he wants, a person who doesn’t back down. When Addy came back out and asked why I didn’t say anything back to him, I knew my response was important because once and a while the words coming out of your mouth are going to stick with them and have a part is shaping their life views. This was one of them. In this moment I focused on the 4 below: 1.) Sometimes responding to an irrational person is not only useless but dangerous. Heated arguments and violence rarely lead to good outcomes. 2.) We don’t let other people’s words and thoughts control our emotions. Addy and I had a quick conversation about this experience and continued to listen to Christmas music and hand out candy canes to kids. 3.) If you feel passionately about something, you don’t make change by demeaning people on the other side of it. You make change by doing things for your cause that move it forward. 4.) Keep your eyes on the prize and don’t get distracted. I explained that this volunteer activity is not about creating raving Salvation Army fans but spending time with her giving back. Engaging with him and changing his mind was not my goal and didn’t deserve much energy. Life tries to distract with all sorts of stuff; if you chase distractions, you will never reach your goal. We are CUSTOM MADE in this house! 💪🤍👂🔔 #happyholidays #merrychristmas #giveback #lifelessons

This #VolunteersWeek we're celebrating those who go the extra mile for stroke survivors and their families. People like Matthew (on the left) and Ricky (on the right), who both volunteer with Hillingdon Stroke Group. Ricky had his stroke three years ago. "The stroke affected my memory. Sometimes finding the right words is hard. I went along to the group to find a space for me, as I missed out on support during Covid." Once Ricky started attending meetings at Hillingdon Stroke Group, everything fell into place. "I went for a cup of tea and ended up running it! I saw that if people weren’t willing to help the group, then it would have closed, and I didn’t want that." Ricky helps run the group with six other volunteers, he uses his career skills to do so. I’m a volunteer driver picking up members who live locally. I also make sure the group runs safely. I used to be a school governor, focused on health and safety. Matthew also helps out at the group alongside Ricky, who is their dad. "I always wanted to volunteer but I didn’t know where to start. I look after all the communication; I contact potential speakers and help plan outings. I sort out the printing of leaflets, and volunteers put them up in community spaces." "The best thing is getting to know people and helping people’s confidence grow. It’s about understanding individuals." Volunteering has brought Ricky and Matthew closer to each other, as well as their community. Matthew has some advice for those who are thinking of volunteering. "See what happens at a group. Even if the opportunity isn’t what you're looking for, you’ve still spent a day learning new things. There’s no wasted effort in exploring opportunities to help your community. Dear Good Humans: Happy Holidays to you. 🎄 🎄 🎄 Helping others = Purposeful. So, yesterday was epic. We volunteered at 7 Bridges to Recovery in Cobb County. SALTO Systems and Swoz Consulting made over 100 meals that were bagged to be given to the homeless. We all agreed that we felt like THIS moment was such a blessing to help others. I was grateful to be there and in good company I might add. Holiday Helpers: Bill Wood Matthew Sprague Ryan Hodges Heena S.
