For more than 35 years Hospice of Rockingham County has had the privilege of serving, supporting, and caring for patients in Rockingham and surrounding counties who are facing a life-limiting illness. In addition to providing quality end-of-life care (hospice), we also provide palliative care. We refer to that as Serious Illness Care. Our mission is to be a supportive presence for life's journey. Whether it is hospice care or serious illness care, our team recognizes that everyone's journey is different and requires a different level of support. You may not even realize what kind of support you need until you are in the middle of a difficult time. Our healthcare system can be difficult to navigate, medical terminology can be confusing; there is so much information to process. During this time, a family often has hard conversations that can evoke strong emotions. Our goal for this podcast that we are calling Compassionate Conversations is that it will serve as another layer of support for the community that we serve. That support may come in the form of education. It may come in the form of truth-telling to battle some of the misconceptions that exist around end-of-life care. We hope to provide a space to have the hard conversations and answer the difficult questions with compassion, dignity, and respect. Not sure if anyone has put it that way yet, but when you are in your last chapter of life, I know it is more of a pressing question. We have all heard, "What do you want to be when you grow up?", "What are you going to do when you retire?" but knowing your end game may be the most important type of planning you do to ensure that your family is not left making decisions. Not many people realize that there are many decisions that need to be made as life draws to a close. From financial planning to funeral arrangements, to understanding what happens to your estate when you are gone. We like to assume, but that typically doesn't turn out well. Both Palliative Care and Hospice programs can provide you with resources to help plan for your end game. You, and only you know what it is that you really want, and who you can count on to make it happen. Putting your decision down in ink helps to solidify those decisions, so no one has to guess or feel the burden of making decisions for you. The best time to do this is now while you still can make those decisions for yourself.
